Co-op signs Royal Mail parcel locker deal to boost in-store services

Co-op has become the first convenience retailer to partner with Royal Mail on a new parcel locker rollout, as part of a wider push to offer more community services.

The new initiative will see 100 of the convenience giant’s stores set to host the new units. The new lockers will allow customers to drop off pre-labelled parcels and returns 24/7, with collection services to follow shortly.

The business said the initiative builds on Co-op’s strategy to offer added-value services that drive footfall and convenience for local communities.

“We are delighted to partner with Royal Mail, enabling Co-op to further expand its network of safe, secure and convenient parcel lockers,” said Co-op head of online development George Hayworth.

The lockers will also support label printing at the point of drop-off, allowing users to scan a QR code to print their postage label, which the convenience chain said is ideal for those returning online purchases or selling second-hand items.

“Co-op is focussed on developing added services and enhanced convenience. We aim to have the best small shops, and work to ensure our stores are a convenient destination for a range of services that meet local needs.”

“Including growing our network of lockers to help residents, commuters and time-pressed consumers pick up or return parcels at a time that suits them, quickly, easily and conveniently.”

The move will see the total number or parcel lockers at Co-op stores to over 900, Co-op also partners with parcel lockers operator Amazon, InPost, Quadient and Yeep.

The news comes as Royal Mail accelerates its parcel locker rollout, following the launch of its own network last December. The company says demand has risen sharply due to the growth of e-commerce and second-hand marketplaces.
