A postman from Basingstoke has been awarded by the Royal Mail for excellence in his role.

Leslie Bowman, 61, came third in the Best Postie of the Year award in the first Heart of Royal Mail Awards, out of 90,000 posties in the UK.

Les, one of the five postmen who cover the Rooksdown area, was nominated by the manager of the Basingstoke Delivery Office, Alan West and was chosen to be in the top six by Royal Mail’s CEOs.

He said: “It’s quite impressive, it feels like quite an accolade to be given third out of all of Britain.

“It feels good to work hard and get recognised for it.”

In Les’ letter of recommendation from Alan West, his ‘tireless worth ethic’ is detailed, including how he opens the delivery office at 4am every morning, hits 100 per cent scores on vehicle safety and has trained more than 30 staff members this year.

Alan wrote: “In all aspects of his work, Les Bowman exemplifies what it means to be positive, brilliant, and part of the team.

“His professionalism and unwavering commitment to excellence make him a valuable asset to the Basingstoke delivery office”

Les was awarded third place out of 7,000 nominations for the award and was invited to the first Heart of Royal Mail Awards ceremony in London.

He has worked for the Royal Mail for 10 years and has been covering the Rooksdown area for the last seven.

Les said he ‘hopes this will boost people’s confidence in the Royal Mail.’

He has since received more than 150 reactions and messages of support from people he delivers to.

Basingstoke DO: 155 duties - so maybe 200 staff, yielding around 15% turnover. It's ambiguous if 'this year' means 2025 or the year elapsed since last May, in which case that doubles to a very plausible 30%.
The machine stops.
