The Royal Mail will have to return to sender after confused residents spotted one of its vans on the Isle of Wight in Welsh livery.

The van was sighted in the village of Brighstone, furnished with a Post Brenhinol logo, which is the Welsh name for the Royal Mail.

Ian Elcock, who took pictures of the van, wondered if one meant for Newport in Wales had turned up accidentally on the island.

But the Royal Mail told the BBC the error had been made by the signwriters contracted to add the logo to the vehicle.

It said: "This van was delivered as intended to Newport, Isle of Wight.

"However, it was incorrectly fitted with Welsh livery on one side by the business we contract to do such work.

"It was not possible to correct this during the peak period when demand was high but it'll be rectified as soon as possible."

It is not the first time islanders have had to swot up on their Welsh because of a signage mix up.

In 2023 supermarket chain Aldi put up a Welsh language sign at a store in Cowes.

Seen a lot of EIIR vans north of the border after the Queen died. RM must have thought the danger of exploding pillarboxes had diminished sufficiently with her passing.

We had a Welsh van up here last summer nestled amongst the hire vans. I noticed the darker paint in the scrubbed cruciform spelled out 'Post Brenhinol'. We're a good 200 miles away so we must have been hard up for vans.

No-one else in the office noticed these things :nervous
The machine stops.
