CWU: Agreement reached on the biggest ever National uplift in Part time contracted hours

Post by POSTMAN »

We are pleased to announce more details regarding the CWU agreement announced with Royal Mail before Christmas regarding the fact that up to 11-thousand-part timers will get the opportunity to increase their contracted hours on legacy terms and conditions up to and including full time hours.

We have been working with Royal Mail to ensure that all 11-thousand-part timers will get the opportunity to accept the increase in their contracted hours before 31st January 2025. The reference point is that the hours had to be worked up to 1st January 2025.

The headlines are
  • 8400 Part timers will get the opportunity to accept a full-time role on a permanent basis.
  • 1700 Part timers will get the opportunity to accept an increase their contracted hours on a permanent basis.
  • 300 Part timers who are on 35 hours who are working over these hours will get the opportunity to accept a 37-hour contract on a permanent basis.
  • A further yet to be identified number of part timers who were employed from 2018 until the 1st of December 2022 who were capped at 35 hours will be offered the opportunity to accept a 37-hour contract on a permanentbasis.
We will be providing the Divisional Reps with the list of part timers per ROD area so they can work with Branch’s to ensure that the relevant part timers are offered the improved contracts before 31st January 2025.

Any new part timer who in the future gets offered an increase in their contract hours will retain their legacy terms and conditions.

There will also be a further opportunity within the 37 Pilot USO units who are going to phase in between February for part timers to get the opportunity to move to full time as the all the modelling shows that there is a requirement for some part timers to become full time.

This is great news story to start the year. It is the biggest ever uplift in full time jobs and this would not have taken place without the CWU using our leverage to ensure that legacy part timers were able to remain on their current terms and conditions.

This year we face two of the biggest challenges that the union has ever dealt with - the takeover and potential USO reform.

The CWU have reached a groundbreaking agreement with EP which will totally reset industrial relations and employee relations in every workplace and it addresses issues such as pay, equalising new entrants’ terms and conditions, improving sick pay, improving SA and overtime rates and improving voluntary redundancy terms.

We are also in discussions with Royal Mail on the USO which will deliver better attendance patterns for all units including improved Wallington type attendances, fewer Saturday attendances, an increase in opportunities for part timers to move to full time, improved quality of service and the opportunity to resolve fatigue in deliveries.

Back the CWU. Join the CWU. Volunteer to become a representative. Help to shape your union at this crucial moment.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

You arent being shafted in this case.

Many ''old guard'' part timers have been working for Royal Mail for over a decade on a part time contract whilst RM bring in new entrants on contracts with more hours rather than make the part timer up to full time

yet you think you are hard done by because you might not get offered a full time contract after joining 6 months ago?!

If RM brought in a ''new new contract'' as of tomorrow that paid less than you get just now had to work 6 days a week would you think its only fair you get the same?

Because as sure as s**t stinks anyone that took that job on those terms would soon start calling you the selfish old guard too :chuckle

What about the real part timers on 30hr or thereabouts contracts? Will there be more full time contracts available as a result of this?

Possibly but they will still be offered on seniority so you will likely be one of the last part timers to be offered one if at all if you just started in July last year.

It’s not for me really as I’m full time now although some of the part timers have been given nice duties that were once filled by full timers who have left so if they were given full time contracts there would need to be a repick.

100%. :Applause :Applause :Applause

I've been full-time for years yet someone on a cushy part-time round working on their own has now got a full-time contract to boot. It f***ing stinks. Bring on the revision and re-pick.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Legacy 30 hour postie here...

I probably would not want to go up to 37 hours. I'd rather go up to 35 hours, which as far as I am aware is now regarded as PT also?...

We have people on 35 hour contracts at our office...

Is it likely I'd be able to agree to move to up to 35 hours rather than 37 hours?

No, 35 is dead now.

Gotta remember that they are potentially going to get us to do a 9 day fortnight. 5 days, then 4 days, then 5 days, then 4 days.... so I assume days will be longer on the 4 day weeks?

So if you increase to a 37 hour contract isn't that going to mean doing something like a 9 hour 15 minute day on the longer days?

How would that 9 day fortnight work in terms of longer days?

I asked to go down to 33 hours just over a year ago. So does this mean I'll be forced to go up to 37 hours again? I was on a 4 day week, 9hr15 day (9hr45 at peak, which nearly killed me on a walk)😳😳
