Working in a mail centre

Anyone here work in mail sorting centre? Is it just as s**t as going out on delivery with all the extra collections,specials, emptying boxes, delivering 100 parcels with your mail bullshit?

However outside of the Mail Centre they must constantly state ‘if anything I think dispatch times will became at least 700 hours later’ and they must post it on here at least once a day. So really it’s a 24/7 job.

All kinds of differnt shifts in a mc.but if your looking specifically for early shift suppose it depends what area you are in.

I mean they have a point but rarely a day goes by without being told despatch times will be later.

You wouldn't last very long if you sorted at a leisurely pace.

Work rates are monitored everywhere. At the start of every hour you see the managers counting how many yorks/sleeves/trays there are of every mail stream sorted in their area.

Nope. Seems like long term they want to replace us all with agency/casuals. In the very long term they're bound to do the same in DOs (or bring in owner-drivers)

When the machines aren't running I would imagine that you would be doing other things in a mail centre. I would also expect that everyone would have to take a break and I would expect that there also wouldn't be any disagreements with management like there is on deliveries over workloads and finishing on time.

Every MC will have CSS machines and either IMPs or iLSMs for sorting letters. Some, not all MCs have got machines for sorting flats, many MCs have to sort flats by hand. There are still some MCs that don't yet have packet sorting machines and so have to sort packets by hand.

When it comes to workloads in DOs you get your workload in 2 hits outside of Xmas pressure (Waves 1 & 2). In a MC it arrives over the course of the shift. We have to be finished by the end of the shifts as that's when final dispatches go out. Anything not ready by final dispatch time fails. If it's inward and the early shift manage to find time to sort it, then they could potentially send it out on the lorry that picks up collections from the DO. It's doubtful that earlies would have the capacity though as they lost a shitload of hours during the last realignment.

Breaks are timed for when there's a longer gap between arrivals into the MC
