SOME WEIRD AUSSIE SITE BOUT PETS!

Do you have a sick pet and need time off from work to take care for him/her? Are you concerned about taking time off or hesitant to explain the situation to your employer? Do you worry about being ridiculed or perhaps even sanctioned? You might try moving to Great Britain.

According to The Sunday Times of London in The Australian (Trends Magazine May/June 2007,) some companies in Britain are starting to allow employees to work from home or even take days off to care for sick pets. Some companies are even introducing "peternity leave" by granting staff paid time off to care for ill pets. Businesses like the Bank of Scotland and Halifax Bank allow peternity leave so long as adequate work coverage can be provided. Still further, Britain's Royal Mail is considering "compassion leave" for an employee if that employee's pet dies.

Well score one for the Brits! Suddenly I feel a strong urge to wave The Union Jack! I'd say that's some impressive acknowledgment of the human-animal bond wouldn't you? Some employment experts believe that bosses are starting to realize the importance pets play in many people's lives. One emerging theory is that if a particular company allows time off for pet care/pet death, it only makes the company that much more attractive to potential employees.

SE 5 union office has a lovely white dog callef Alfie - maybe we all need a Post Office Pet - with all the hassles at POL - get something big enough and it would stop the managers AND customers shouting at us!

I did hear rumours that a postie somewhere got 5 days off when his dog died. Does anyone know about this or is it one of the urban legends that keeps on rolling along.

I've got a cat called jess and she helps me with my round. I still wear one of those peaked caps and you rarely see me delivering.

This is london

It was true!! However, he was not allowed the time off but took the time off sick as he was so distraught. Royal mail then sacked him but he won his ET and received an undisclosed amount at least Â£10,000. Read the full story above.

As a serious side to the story above, in delivering their verdict, the ET summed up saying that the majority of the postmans absence was due to Accidents at work which should have been discounted by Royal Mail, does this now set a precident for future cases?

There's a post in the Union Room from 'andycprice' regarding AOD's.
If RM managers do not follow the proper procedures when there has been an AOD which they don't then you've got them by the bollox.

Put it this way i would of thought 90 odd% of AOD'S on file now would have to be discounted,i know 100% ALL of mine would be.

Chances are it's that.

In our office they are doing their best to count accidents on duty now. I know one person at least who has been issued a stage following an AOD and there have been other cases where they have tried.
The trouble is, they do this at Stage 1 and 2 where there is no appeal and then you have to fight it at Stage 3 by which time it could be too late.

Well,after what i've found out about the procedure for them.
If a screw was to give a warning out on the basis of an AOD that has not followed the proper procedure,then that is a case of b&h and i'd report the manager asap and take it as far as i could.
This needs to be seriously spread around,Managers are getting away with murder.
I'm gonna sort out a post along with andy and make it a sticky or something so it highlights how things should be done.
