Chief executive Nick Read (pictured) said he could 'only apologise' for the mistake, after the Mail revealed how the postmasters' personal details were put on the organisation's website

The head of the Post Office yesterday apologised for 'a truly terrible error' after it published the home addresses of 555 wronged postmasters.

Chief executive Nick Read said he could 'only apologise' for the mistake, after the Mail revealed how the postmasters' personal details were put on the organisation's website.

The Information Commissioner has launched a probe into the 'incident'.

The Post Office, which falsely accused hundreds of postmasters of stealing in the faulty Horizon IT scandal, published a dossier of people involved in a High Court action in 2019.

The document, marked 'confidential', included a list of names and home addresses with postcodes.

One, ex-postmaster Christopher Head (pictured), tweeted a letter he sent Mr Read and Post Office chairman Nigel Railton, telling them: 'There are many who hadn't shared details with their own families and others who are extremely traumatised by this whole scandal even today and this has further impacted them'

Those affected expressed their fury. One, ex-postmaster Christopher Head, tweeted a letter he sent Mr Read and Post Office chairman Nigel Railton, telling them: 'There are many who hadn't shared details with their own families and others who are extremely traumatised by this whole scandal even today and this has further impacted them.'

He said Mr Read replied, saying: 'This is a truly terrible error and one for which at this stage I can only apologise.'

Meanwhile, a Post Office investigator yesterday admitted deleting information about bugs in the system from a witness statement used to prosecute a postmaster.

Warned about potentially incriminating himself at the inquiry in London, Graham Ward denied his actions were part of a wider cover-up.
