Royal Mail has said that work is not yet complete on its new sorting office to serve Nuneaton. It is having to move from its current home in Church Street due to the proposed 'Justice Walk' regeneration project which includes a £20m learning and living zone which will boast a new library, offices and up to 65 homes planned for the Church Street and Vicarage Street area.
This will see the land the office currently sits on, as well as that of the old Wilkos store and Powell House, demolished in favour of a new library and apartments. The current library will also be bulldozed.
The new Royal Mail sorting office will be based in Bermuda village. It is being constructed by the Deeley group on two-acre brownfield site which was formerly part of the famous Stanley Brick Works.
Building work started last in May last year and, in the past week, several reserved matters applications have been made to the planning department at Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council in regards to the site in Hazell Way.
CoventryLive asked Royal Mail for an update as well as a planned opening date. A spokesperson said that work remains ongoing with no opening date fixed as yet.
It is known that once the construction work is finished, Royal Mail will then have to fit it out. Once complete, the delivery office will boast an extensive yard and car-parking, with 60 spaces for staff and customers, including two electric vehicle charging bays.
A total of 53 commercial vehicle spaces, including 28 electric vehicle charging points, will be used by Royal Mail’s fleet and the building itself will play home to more than 100 staff.
