I have been working full time since October 2nd, almost a year in total. The other day I turned a corner in the van and scraped another van. I panicked and drove off. I didnt report it as I thought maybe it was nothing. I looked at the possible damage and could not see an issue except for scratched paintwork. Yesterday, I was sent home from work as they said there was significant damage to the left side wheel arch and the left side door would not open properly, it would stick. Not get stuck but be a little awkward to close. There a number of vans with doors that are like this without the damage. The angle that I hit the van was not enough in my opinion that the wheel arch would get hit.
I have to go in tomorrow and see the manager for an official report, I am concerned of what will happen. What information could they look at with the regards to my driving history. I know that there is a logging device that watches my driving, the red, yellow and green beeping thing. Does the vehicle record routes and parking times as well? I am a little concerned as the vehicle may have been parked in a car park for maybe an hour.

If the door was already sticking and damage to wheel arche ect are they already logged as faults on previous van checks?

You are definitely in trouble.

Leaving the scene of an accident and by the sounds of it not reporting vehicle damage are serious things.

If there’s a union rep in your office I suggest you try to get hold of them early tomorrow - like at least an hour early so you can discuss beforehand.

Always report accidents like this folks. We all make mistakes. But driving off after making one, when there are likely witnesses and CCTV around, is infinitely worse.

I am not part of the union and I said that I was possibly aware of a collsion but did not think that it was that bad.
Would they get the police invovled?
This is shooting my anxiety through the roof, I have not been sleeping much recently and having bad dreams. I am waiting for doctors appointments to sort my depression which has been goin on for a while now.

Your mental health issues are definitely mitigation to use if you end up in a disciplinary hearing. You should have reported it but maybe didn't due to your existing issues.

I have been taken off of driving for the time being.
I have to go in and go through the incident for insurance and then do a trial. not sure what that means. I am concerned that they may get the police involved.
Someone mentioned going to a union rep, I have not joined, would they still help?

If third party is involved then usually you are taken off driving and given an assessment by a driving instructor.
The severity is that, did you do a runner from the scene of a collision?
If you got out of the van to inspect damage then drove off you have consciously left the scene,otherwise you may not be aware that you scraped the van and carried on.

no, i didnt get out, i just thought that it was a minor bump and nothing more, that the bumper had hit his bumper.

For me it's not only that you didn't stop and try to see what damage you had done to the third party, even leaving a note on wind screen. You said you panicked, would a minor insignificant bump induce that?

But you left the damage to your van for someone else to potentially get the blame for.

Driving away after an RTC (if there is any damage) is a criminal offence.

And not reporting it to RM is worse than the accident. I don't know one long term postie that hasn't had an incident.

I hope things go okay for you, I know that not stopping can instinctively feel the safe option.

are RM aware of your mental health issues? if not it may be a good idea to get your doctor to write a letter with your recent medical history before you go into any meetings, also take a trusted colleague in, it doesn't have to be a rep, just a witness to anything said
