The Horizon scandal was an absolute outrage which ruined the lives of many Scots families.
A faulty computer system saw hundreds of former postmasters across the country wrongly blamed for missing cash. It took a mental toll on those involved and was one of the most widespread miscarriages of justice in the UK.
At least 70 Scots workers were forced to pay out thousands to the Post Office. They are among those whose stories are being retold in the TV mini-series Mr Bates Vs the Post Office this week.
It is a disgrace that late North Uist postmaster William Quarm was convicted of embezzling tens of thousands of pounds in 2010, which left him a “broken man”.
His wife Anne managed to get his conviction quashed last year but she should never have had to in the first place. Perthshire postmaster Chris Dawson also went through an awful ordeal.
Although he avoided a conviction, it is shameful that he was forced to go through bankruptcy, losing his house, his 14-year marriage and his reputation when he was pursued by the Post Office for missing cash.
Former CEO Paula Vennells and other senior post office figures should be held to account for their part in the debacle. It is ridiculous that she was awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2019 New Year Honours List.
She should have the title stripped because of the scandal which unfolded under her tenure. The victims will never get full justice but this would at least make some amends.
