The price of first class stamps has increased for the second time this year and many have said the Royal Mail should be handed back to the government
Research suggests 68% of Brits want the Royal Mail in public ownership (Image: SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images)
The Royal Mail has bumped the price of first-class stamps by a staggering 14 percent over increasing cost pressures - and we want to know what YOU think.
This means sending a standard-size letter by premium post has climbed from £1.10 to £1.25, while a first-class stamp for large letters has soared from £1.60 to £1.95. Purchasing a second-class stamp for large letters has also been pushed back from £1.15 to £1.55.
It marks the second time first-class stamps have increased this year, with the labels rising from 95p to £1.10 on April 3. While second-class stamps for standard letters have remained at their original price of 75p, the full list of price changes have been detailed online. Royal Mail bosses have blamed the price hike on soaring costs and universal service obligation, meaning letters are delivered to UK households six days a week.
Nick Landon, chief commercial officer at Royal Mail said: “We understand the economic challenges that many of our customers are currently facing and have considered the price changes very carefully in light of the significant decline in letter volumes. Letter volumes have reduced dramatically over recent years, down more than 60% from their peak in 2004/5 and 30% since the pandemic. It is vital that the Universal Service adapts to reflect this new reality.”

Vincent Cable and David Cameron took their pound of flesh and shared the rest with their cronie pals.
You can all thank them for f**king Royal Mail as a public service, into the ground.

The big problem is that renationalising RMG/IDS would require paying the going rate to the shareholders (writing a fat cheque to the Czech) - a morally-questionable reality. Unless anyone out there really thinks an imminent Keir Starmer government is going to channel Fidel Castro circa 1960 and straight-up seize it.
The machine stops.

There's "should" and there's "will"
No government would nationalise a dying business unless there's some sort of national need, and there isn't.
Just the Mirror talking tripe again.

And how many times was it said that this (current situation) would happen, oh yes it will improve our access to funding
improve the service to the customers/public. We all suspected that it was purely to benefit fat cats and investors.CWU said so, most commentators other than tories said so! Now we’ll have a hells job to get the govt of the day to obtain it back. All in less than 10 years of privatisation. Rico started the ball rolling with the changes we now “enjoy” after 5 years. All the investment has been directed towards “super hubs” and green agenda’s meanwhile the HGV fleet that has been around the world more times than the sun and are on life support in most VOCs. The DO’s have lovely shiny new 100 miles per change eleccy vans to do 40-50 miles a day
i’m so looking forward to the company explanation of “company image “ in the next drivers CPC’s.
