Parcel route optimisation on PDAs

Post by lee.uk »

I've been working at a different DO for a couple of days and somebody told me there was a way to optimise a route on the PDA when delivering parcels. Apparently it doesn't work if scanned to the core route. You have to scan the route to a different option apparently, then there is an app on the PDA you can run which tells you the best delivery route.

It was all explained very quickly in the carpark, but it sounds useful. Can anybody explain how this is done please?

Thank you.

It’s on the second page of the home app (not where you can see indoor, outdoor etc.) called RON. Take it with a pinch of salt as it’s a bit temperamental. Likes to go in a figure of 8

Look for the RON tile on the pda. you need to scan a non-ops header code (ask for one locally) and then scan all the parcels.

once done set a start postcode and time and submit. allow a minute for it to upload fully.

then go to outdoor tile on the app and scan the same non-ops header code. it'll download the list of delivery points in order.

there is also a van loading option toggle in the top right corner. you can toggle that on and scan all the he parcels again and it'll tell you the sequence number for that specific parcel. have a Sharpie handy and write the letter and number on the item and throw them in the back of the van by zones (A, B, C, 1234567...85) etc.

That's great. Thank you so much. The van is usually full of 3 yorks of parcels and this will make things much easier. Hopefully. Thank you.

You can’t go straight into RON now, you need to scan to dedicated parcel route first then RON then Outdoor

I don't do that and no complaints. Feel free to explain extract which buttons to press and in what order. Kind of shows how nationally we're all doing different things right?

My colleagues are using a paid app named Circuit, they said the app give you a better route, save you a lot of time.

You can only use it if you are just doing parcels not if you’re on a regular walking round

As you can’t be logged into 2 routes and if you’re doing a round you need your collection boxes and customer collects on your PDA

Also there is a limited number of dedicated parcel routes that you can scan and once the parcels are scanned to a route that’s it nobody else can use that route for the day

So what I’m saying is the managers won’t let you use RON if you’re just doing a regular round

The latest RON app is just as good as circuit, it's rare it can't find an address and take you right to the door and all you need to do is scan the 2D barcode rather than type the post code onto your phone, plus your using RM PDA's battery and data and not your own.

The only issue is you can't use the parcel routes if you're using a delivery route, which is a pain if your not familiar with the duty.

Not supposed to scan it into RON anymore. Need to scan it to the dedicated parcel route to catch Inflights & redirections.

From memory
Indoor Sorting
> Scan to Dedicated Parcel Route, then scan a route header
Scan all the parcels.
Send to cloud or something along those likes

Go to the RON tile. The route header is already there so just enter time & confirm (a couple of times)
If it doesnt load up the parcels you've just scanned wait a minute & try again. Longest i've waited is about 5 minutes.

Go to the Outdoor tile. Route header should already be loaded up if not cancel Outdoor and scan the same route header. RON will have put them into a route for you. Then basically follow what Rucku said about numbering the parcels.

RON does the job but its definitely not the best. It works so use it but the it doesnt give you the best route. Its only as good as the FMO data.

See my other post for what buttons to press.

Thats the way it was done before they introduced "Scan to dedicated parcel route". PCOM manager said the RON update towards the end of the year will be a massive improvement on RON. RON has improved alot since the LATS first came in. Generally its good but anyone with a braincell can see the flaws if you were to follow its route.

It all depends what route you're following for the ones I use it seems reasonably OK, assuming you have a rough idea of the duty then you can simply deliver the parcels in your own order, if you haven't then it's the company's time your wasting following the route not your own time.
