Royal Mail said they are investigating it 'as a matter of urgency'
Royal Mail says they are ‘investigating’ after 200 undelivered letters were found ‘dumped’ outside the sorting office in Walworth.
A resident, who prefers to remain anonymous, said they were shocked to discover ‘around 200 undelivered letters’ on the ground outside the Royal Mail sorting office that covers Kennington and Walworth – on Sunday morning, March 5.
They told the News: “I came past the Walworth Royal Mail delivery office this morning and saw a bunch of letters dumped by the rear fire exit on Manor Place.
“There were about 200 letters including Thames Water bills and Southwark branded envelopes.
The resident said they returned a short while later and posted all of the letters in the post box that is directly linked to the sorting office, although some had been taken or opened.
Royal Mail said they are ‘investigating’ this.
“A lady walking past said she had seen people pick up letters and walk away. When I reposted the letters some had been opened as well.
“So as well as contacting Royal Mail, I also called the police as I am concerned about potential ID theft.”
Following these concerns, the News has contacted the police and is awaiting their response.
“I am not blaming the staff as it looks like these may have been intercepted stolen from a pouch and then dumped,” the resident added.
A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “The security and integrity of the mail is of paramount importance to Royal Mail. We are investigating this photograph as a matter of urgency.”
