As Royal Mail boss Simon Thompson is set to make a second commons select committee appearance to answer questions on the company’s ongoing performance, new data reveals that the company still remains far behind its competitors when it comes to lead times on international orders.

Research from AI-powered supply chain management platform 7bridges revealed that in January 2023, Royal Mail deliveries to the USA were 133 per cent slower than DHL. It also found that Royal Mail deliveries lagged behind (by 75 per cent) both FedEx and UPS during normal service.

Philip Ashton, Founder & CEO 7bridges commented: “Hampered by industrial action, as well as recent cyber-attack, International and European shipping via Royal Mail has taken a hit – these extended timelines will no doubt dissuade customers prioritising speedy, efficient delivery of their goods in the future. Plus, Royal Mail’s sub-contracting to other logistics providers to satisfy demand not only tends to increase costs but can have an adverse effect on customer service.”
