11/01/23 Mount Pleasant Bulletin

Post by jimallen »

Hi, and Happy New Year! Here is the Mount Pleasant bulletin of 11 January, comments welcomed!

NO QUARTER!
We’re told that RM boss Thompson sent the union
New Year’s “greetings” a bit late – on 6 Jan…
Apparently if an agreement "cannot be reached,
this cannot prevent the revisions program
proceeding". And he had the cheek to add that the
proposed changes will be "deployed by the start of
the new financial year", meaning April!
Management hasn't backed down, why should
we?!

WE’LL STRIKE WHEN WE WANT TO...
He said talks would resume this Monday until 20
Jan, and be “strictly time-bound”. What's more, he
dared lay down the condition that we may not
strike during this period! Worse, the over-127 of us
(strikers and reps) who’re under disciplinary
suspension are not automatically reinstated, when
this should be union officials’ condition for the talks
to resume!

...AND WE CAN DO SO NOW!
Our problem with all of this is that Ward is going to
want to appear “reasonable” and go along with
Thompson. And with the imposition of all of these
changes going ahead already (e.g. the meagre pay
rise) – our only defence is to go on the offensive, all
out, or better, occupy!

JOB MURDER IS JOB MURDER
As for his supposed concessions, he's just taking
the mickey! The union officials claim to have
achieved something by getting him to back down
on compulsory redundancies. But the real problem
is the huge number of jobs that have been, and are
cut permanently via so-called voluntary
redundancies – and those jobs are lost forever.

NOT THE KIND OF CHANGES WE WANT!
We've seen some of Thompson’s “changes” being
implemented already. For instance those re-sign
sheets on the wall near the Book Room. Managers
want us to sign up to work anywhere in an area
rather than for a specific duty! This would be the
final death of the 318 then... if managers get away
with it!

OUR SAY AND OUR PAY!
Management in deliveries are in discussions with
our union reps about the job revisions (expected in
March now?). So why don't we have our say about
this? We don't want job cuts, that's one thing. But
if some of our workmates want to leave, we want a
full restoration of the redundancy packages which
were previously on offer! And anyone who leaves
must be replaced, of course.

HEADS IN THE CLOUDS
On primary letters, we see on the resign that
managers want to cut us down to as few as two
people! Obviously, we’re already not enough, so
how on earth do they think this will work?

NO TO THIS CASUALISATION!
One "idea" we heard from King Etcetera was that
they'd fill "gaps" on primary letters with "outside
people" – i.e. temps. And there'll certainly be
permanent "gaps", so temps will be here on a
"permanent" basis?! OK, give them contracts!

CONSOLIDATED IN OUR PAY!
So DUMs want to cut our driving allowance on
deliveries? And that's not all. They also want to
cut our Door-2-Dustbin allowance, which was given
to us to carry trash on our rounds. If the
performance based allowance is also cut (another
of their plans), we’ll end up 100s of pounds short
every month!

YEP
And while management is planning to cut our
driving allowance on deliveries, they are pushing
our mates who aren’t driving to get their driving
licenses! Are they that DUM!?

THEY MAKE US SICK!
Some managers here are trying to intimidate us
over our sick leave, and also demanding a doctor’s
certificate from day one. They’re just trying it on,
as they’ve often done before. But we’ve also heard
of mates who haven't received sick pay, and that’s
out of order.

BUSTING A GUT?...
In the run-up to Xmas, all us temps ever heard from
managers was "faster, faster, faster"! They
wouldn't even let us use the toilet when we needed
to go. Some of us were doing 6 hours of overtime
– 13 hour shifts – and we heard at least one
workmate collapsed from exhaustion!

...BUST THEIR GUT!
Post-Xmas, managers have been telling temps,
"slow down, take your time"! Now of course we're
"surplus to requirements" and "let go"… but how
long till we're brought back? We're fed up of this –
there need to be permanent jobs for those who
want them!
