Concern over Amersham Royal Mail delivery 'chaos' at Christmas

A Buckinghamshire MP has urged Royal Mail to sort out postal problems in Amersham ahead of Christmas.

Chesham and Amersham MP Sarah Green voiced concern over the “chaos” affecting residents’ mail deliveries for over a year, including delayed hospital appointment notices, driving licences and passports.

Missed Christmas post last year prompted Bucks Council leader Martin Tett to intervene in January by writing to Royal Mail representatives.

Ms Green said: “Local people have suffered due to Royal Mail’s failure to meet the standard of service they should be held to.

“With national disruption making matters worse, I was keen to meet with those in charge to find out how they plan to fix the acute local problems we are seeing.

Royal Mail announced they had hired ten extra staff for night shifts at the Amersham sorting office to speed processing of mail and prepare it for the days’ rounds.

While Ms Green welcomed this action, she remained “concerned that this may not be enough to restore reliable services to your area.”

She added: “At this time of year, post is also how we receive gifts and cards from loved ones, which can be a lifeline for those living alone or having a tough time.

“The Postal workers themselves are trying their hardest. It is essential that Royal Mail management gets to grips with the situation before people in this area are hit with a second round of Christmas chaos.”

In recent months, Royal Mail operations have been impacted by industrial action called by the Communication Workers Union over cost of living pay dispute – most recently on in late November and December 9, 11, 14, 15, 23 and 24.

Royal Mail was contacted for a comment.
