Royal Mail delivery problem costing business owner hundreds of pounds

A man has said Royal Mail is costing his small business hundreds of pounds due to delivery delays.

The man, who did not wish to be named, said he runs a business that sells items through eBay and relies on the postal service to get the parcels out to customers.

But he said due to delivery delays and disruption some packages were taking 15 to 20 days to arrive, even when sent first class, and customers were demanding refunds from eBay, who would honour that commitment.

He said: "Last Christmas I lost around £900 on 'missing mail' even though they had a tracking number with Royal Mail.

"But because they were so late, eBay would allow the refunding, leaving me with the bill.
"This year, I have just stopped all transactions because we are having the same problem again and I won't be the only small business going through this.

"It is a hard choice for you to make, if you have an item that costs £5, it makes sense to send it via Royal Mail's first class at £1.53 rather than some other companies that cost £6-7, but then you risk it not being delivered on time.

"It has taken me five years to build up a good reputation on eBay and this is dragging it down - it is beyond a joke."

It comes after a difficult period for Royal Mail who had a number of staff absences due to Covid-19 affecting distribution at their offices in New Ferry and Upton, Wirral, and St Helens and Warrington.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “Every item of mail we handle is important to us. Our postmen and postwomen work extremely hard to deliver high standards of service every day to all our customers across the UK.

"We are subject to some of the highest Quality of Service targets of any major European country and we deliver the vast majority of First Class mail the next working day after posting.

"We apologise to this customer if they did not receive the high standards our customers expect and receive from us. Customers who have questions or concerns about our service should contact our customer service team via royalmail.com or by calling 03457 740 740."

Commenting on eBay's procedures, a spokesperson said: "eBay offers protections to its sellers for a wide variety of delivery problems outside their control, including weather disruptions, logistics issues caused by COVID-19 and border control delays.

"The vast majority of our users do not experience any problems with delivery, however, on the rare occasions that issues do occur we work closely with sellers to resolve them."
