Retiring postie hangs up sack - after 46 years

A POSTIE from Bridgwater with over 46 years in his mail sack has retired after a surprise send-off from colleagues.

Eric Treasure was surrounded by friends, family, and fellow workers at 8am just before he was supposed to do his final round.

Colleague Joe Gray helped organise the occasion and told the Mercury a bit about the man who had served Royal Mail for more than four-and-a-half decades.

"His son Steve actually surprised him as he knew nothing about the presentation," Joe said.

"Eric was the last postman in Bridgwater in the town office to hang the mail bags for the trains to catch.

"I helped organise the surprise after bumping into his son Steve, who said Eric hadn't mentioned it because he was shy."

Eric worked for Royal Mail for over 46 years, starting on July 20, 1961, and officially retiring on June 22 this year.

But Joe said he popped in the next day: "He came in to help them out to deliver Burrow Bridge.

"I know he wanted to say goodbye to his regulars."

I wouldn't want anything from any bosses when I go. All the best to Eric though. I hope it's a very long and happy retirement.

:wave :wave Bye, Bye, Eric mate, I'd like to think that somehow you will read all these tributes paid to you by workmates from all over the country who have never even met you, in a media that hadn't been dreamed of even 20 years ago never mind 46 years. WE appreciate someone like yourself, 46 years out in all weathers, rising early and all the other stuff us posties do. The way I see it Eric is that someone like yourself and all that you signify is what we are now fighting for. The Destructive duo at the head of our organisation will congratulate you on your magnificent record of public service, but the truth is they have absolutely no idea what makes someone like yourself tick. They are out to destroy the ETHOS that you have spent your working life serving. Enjoy your retirement Mate, you deserve it!!!!!!!!! --------------KAWAKImage
PS That goes for cornishrep's DAD too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was always said a posties job was called a "job for life" and no one ever left once they got in. How times have changed now its just called "life". Eric is one of the last of his generation Royal Mail don't care about individual workers welfare no more, They couldn't care less whether you stayed 1 year or 20. What they want now is young lads running there arses off regardless of Quality of service, sorry but thats how it is ..
Eric have a happy retirement and I hold me hand out ya mate ...for such dedication something thats not appreceated anymore :Applause
