So martin says the new way of working3/4 duties is not working, and might only work in a smal office or rural office . So what now?

Don’t think anyone, including the cwu know what the next steps are, no surprise it’s not working- who knew?
I think I read somewhere about the combined duties taking 1 and a half duties, not 2.

You all know the answer. RM does it anyway. It's the RM way and if it doesn't work it's down you all you lazy posties, strike action, COVID, weather and climate change.

Someone said in another thread they are doing 5 into 6 rather than 3 into 4 - how that works in practise and when it comes to signing for duties I have no ideaChelseablue wrote: ↑14 Jul 2025, 20:20So martin says the new way of working3/4 duties is not working, and might only work in a smal office or rural office . Well, Royal Mail will keep pushing it through, the CWU will continue to support the deal and we will pay the price.

Doesn't matter if the current model is working or not. The USO reforms are being pushed through regardless as if we are now French Foreign Legionnaires and are expected to adapt to the new ways with physical and mental resilience. It's a rare sight to come in after a day off and find that both duties have been covered. And it's the expectation from management that you will somehow pick up the slack and complete the full over-extended duty plus leftovers in a single day just because they have dangled a wee bit of overtime in front of you. What exactly are you offering? A bit of early prep? The use of your own van without the constraints of a van share partner? Maybe an extra hour of docket to cover work that should have taken 6-7 hours to complete properly yesterday if the office had been fully staffed??
How this business is still only posting small margins when the workforce is being stretched is beyond me. Either someone upstairs is cooking the books or they are running the place with an outstanding level of inefficiency. I have a hunch that it's both.

On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

I suspect there was absolutely no contingency plan for the ODM trials flopping. RM sure were keen to jump Ofcom's inevitable endorsement - the regulator making a power play meant it was shown to be unworkable before it could be unleashed nationally. And we're told the status quo can't persist, so the longer it takes to formulate a new plan the worse it's probably going to be.Chelseablue wrote: ↑14 Jul 2025, 20:20So martin says the new way of working3/4 duties is not working, and might only work in a smal office or rural office . Do you think their Super Strategic Spreadsheet (S3) has been rounding numbers for so long that all their assumptions have drifted far beyond reality? How else can we explain a money-saving exercise that has flipped into adding duties, adding nightshifts, basically reversing the last decade and a half of cuts?
The machine stops.

The answer is to have a revision, make the walks smaller and put more duties back in. Royal mail are very good at having revisions and taking duties out, time to do the opposite.

Martin Walsh said everything had to be right before any experiment was rolled out. You cannot take Martin seriously. He is not a credible or serious trade unionist. Stop paying his wages. Create your own union.Chelseablue wrote: ↑14 Jul 2025, 20:20So martin says the new way of working3/4 duties is not working, and might only work in a smal office or rural office . So what now?

The end goal is surely to separate parcels from letters completely. This would allow RM to focus on growing their market share in the market that is actually growing. So just get on with that.
Dedicated parcel routes in all DO's. Tracked, SDs and anything that doesn't fit through a letter box goes out with a driver.
Without having to piss about with packets it makes delivering letters much quicker and imo easier. You could make some pretty big duties that you just eb and flow between one day to the next.
Would save allot of prep time as well.
None of this needs to be rocket science.

I was wondering, perhaps just perhaps, the time has come for shedding of thousands of jobs, maybe that is what the future really holds for the postie.Acca Dacca wrote: ↑15 Jul 2025, 14:22A great ideaRen Hoëk wrote: ↑15 Jul 2025, 12:28The end goal is surely to separate parcels from letters completely. In reality if all you are trying to do is delay the inevitable perhaps it's time to let go.
I think most sensible people do realise that at some stage this has to happen, maybe the current terms available is as good as it gets and people should be allowed to cash in, maybe the union can get better terms and maybe they won't.
Whatever the case if the reforms don't work to their liking i fancy Dan the man will swing the big axe and all bets will be off, doesn't matter what promises he has made to anyone, he ain't here to lose money always remember that.

Re: Martins comment,,
That would be a goal. It's the same goal as the ODM. Reduce head count whilst still reaching targets. To create a sustainable business model that secures jobs long term. Plenty of people ready to go or will be retiring soon. Its sounds callous but RM is not a charity.Acca Dacca wrote: ↑15 Jul 2025, 14:22A great ideaRen Hoëk wrote: ↑15 Jul 2025, 12:28The end goal is surely to separate parcels from letters completely. The longer this goes our competitors will happily hoover up our business.
Im glad you agree though. An endorsement of what I have said is the way forward for the business.
