Was waiting for the IMP crew to finish (breakdown cost 20mins runtime), waiting for them to tie up, push mail to the primary and roads for dispatch. Was doing fukkal waiting so went down there, TO HELP MY MATES who shared a picket line with me a couple o months ago. Never been TPMd but had experience on LSM's. They was more than happy for me to tie up. Machines was stopped, just tieing up, so i joined in. Tied up 25bundles an everyone happy. No Health/safety issues, no chance of me getting caught in a machine, just postman working to get a job done and go home at 9pm. Funny how so many people stood and watched waitin. Dont talk about lazy imp operators, talk about the lazy sh***s that just wait and cant be bothered to help.
As an imp operator I don't consider this to be a boring issue. I do not agree fully with the topic starter but I do think it has raised some excellent points regarding H and S.

Though I commend your initiative in helping the imp staff out I would like to point out that moving you on to the imp section should have been a managerial decision and not one that you took upon yourself.

I personally would not have wanted you to help had it of been a choice you had come to yourself.

I am of the opinion that we should all do the job properly, I will do what is expected of me and no more, if the shift fails, then that is a failing of the management.

This falls for me into the same category as carrying 2 boxes at a time, pushing more than one piece of equipment and not pressing a blue stop button when clearing a jam on an imp.

Lets do the job we are meant to do and lets do it properly.
postal_jedi wrote:Typical, a Postal Worker shows initiative and gets a hard time.
Another point I'd like to raise here is, Moon71 had decided to help out on another section, I'm presuming without his managers knowledge, had there been a fire drill or god forbid a real fire this could have caused a great deal of confusion. Thats the reason we have to inform our manager when we are going to the toilet, we are not asking for his permission.

So I agree with you he was showing initiative but at the same time he could of put others in grave danger.

With regards to the book I mentioned, I most certainly was not trying to take, "the arguement to an extreme in order to gain a so called triumph". I was merely inquiring as to whether you had read it as I thought it may be of some interest to you.

Your apology is accepted though.

A quick reply to my office decurom. The late imp shift finishes at 9pm, so does the manual letters, and outward packets. If the imps are normally wrapped up at 8.30 pm, then they prep for the inward night shifts an knock off at 8.45pm, they like those fifteen minutes, i hear some delivery staff make more but thats part of the job. Off course packets an maual letters finish at bang-on 9pm, and some despatch workers work til 9.30pm.
If the imps were to ever fail in my office, the imp team would be punished to work til 9pm for months. Flexibility? Not a word i'd use, carrot and stick yes, an they take it every time, just like delivery staff, the whole office depends upon their finish time. Now if there running late, then everyone suffers. Seems like people would rather me stand doing nothing for 20minutes waitin for the mech mail to be bagged off instead of digging in. Do you really have to be tpm trained to tie a machine up that isnt running? Incredible. Instead of helping out waitin for the imp area i could stand doin fook all, some one could watch me and start a thread, "lazy packet sorters allways on PSP, Mp3's and txting and reading the paper" Seems like the start of this thread........
As for TPM heres a story. I once worked an OCR machine for 3 years, then my screw turned up one day an told me an my mate, i gotta go on a training course or i wont be able to work on it anymore. You wouldnt adam an eve it......After 3 years they want a new training course!!!!
I guess whats different from me an some of you is that, when theres downtime, many mc staff are allowed to stand and do fook all, whilst in other offices you your expected to work in another work area.
Lets face facts, some of you people wouldnt last five minutes in my mailcentre.
In our office drivers unload there own vehicles and if they fill a york on the bay, they have to take it in an replace the empty york. A london driver got a transfer to us and after every collection dumped his work in a pile on the bay. That mail just sat there every day until some one twigged. He now works at McDonalds. Funny how he tells us its the best thing that ever happened to him.

Flashman, I think the keyword in your post is 'presume'. Moons post doesn't stipulate either way as to wether or not he informed his manager. I never have, nor ever will, endorse not informing your manager when you leave your work area, for whatever reason. In my book it is a 'given' that you do this, and I do think you are being a tad pedantic, although you do raise a very valid H&S issue. In my MC there are a lot of staff constantly moving from one section to another for many different reasons. Lets add to this staff going to toilets and that all important, unofficial cigarette break so many staff believe they are entitled to. It would be a shear logistical nightmare for any manager to keep up with. This is why I do believe, with regards to H&S and fire procedure, each section having a separate congregation point owes itself to the aforementioned problems. In my MC each section is allocated a letter which corresponds to an area in the carpark for the staff of that section to congregate for a head count. I realise that this is not infalible as should a member of staff be missing the manager needs to their whereabouts, but doesn't neccessarly mean the missing member of staff left their work area without informing the manager. These two systems do need to work hand in hand and even then are still not perfect.
If not I apologise, I don't often have anyone agreeing with me.
As for accepting my apology I'm afraid it is put on hold, Flashman. It only stands if you are agreeing with me. Wether or not I decide to reinstate it, largely depends on your reasoning as to why you think your reading recommendation would be of interest to me.

I am dissappointed moon. Your justification for your actions has done nothing but invalidate the jobs of your colleagues. I have always maintained everyone should start and finish when they are due to, in between that period they should work. You consider working till your allocated finish time punishment, how? It's what you are paid to do. You argue that instead of helping out with the IMP area you could have just stood around. You could have done many other jobs in your MC. Instead you chose to help your mates, showing the management that their jobs can be finished early. Had you helped to get them finished on time you would have illustrated the need for more manpower. If it is true that you do have to be IMP trained to work on an IMP when it is switched off, then you were in the wrong, again, by blatantly flouting H&S regulations. Also, has it occurred to you that the London Driver working in McDonald's may be happier?

Your argument is clearly because u see urself above posties. In my office the arrogant attitude of engineers and the low opinion they hav of operators is rife. They act as tho u r scum of the earth wen u get them for a fault. It can be infuriating as sum of them are the most gormless thick morons i hav ever met.
It's a shame we can't say which office we come from on here.
I have met many Engineers who are deeply unhappy with the standard of operators and the way they behave, whereas I'm lucky in that we have a mix of walking dead and young/keen in my office.
Shame there always tends to some animosity, but that's life.
Was that "text-speak" you were using above?

Please take note here Semacsorter, I have never disputed the IMP's performance nor have I disputed TPM payments. I will stand by what I said with regards to what I witnessed. If I can see what went on in one night, then senior management, whom I doubt are IMP/TPM trained and frankly don't care about the colour of the lights on an IMP, can see it too and will eventually act on it. Wether or not you accept my discription is irrelavent, especially to me. I have merely listed what I saw. I would also say, I find your analogy with regards to the gatehouse highly amusing as, ironically, the gatehouse keeper in my MC has been replaced with a computerised swipe card system. Perhaps an omen!

Tman you are wrong. Its the staff with the least seniority who will go.
I once saw someone speeding, does that count? Guess what, the bast*rd didn't get booked, there's me minding my own business - well probably distracted with worrying about what's going on at work - get caught with a GATSO, 3 points and a £60 fine - the cheeky bast*rds asked me if I wanted to go on a speed awareness course costing £80 - my reply was written on the back of the cheque! Oh I didn't mention I'd gone 36 years without a ticket, my theory was if it took 36 years for them to catch me for the first time I'd be 97 by the time they caught me again. I hope this little tale helps you understand how unfair life is.

:left: :left: :left: :left: :Very Happy :funneh :funneh :Applause :Applause :Applause RM do a very good job at bringing themselves into disrepute but that'd be a bit too deep & profound for them .
They would be only too keen to suspend people for bringing RM into disrepute . They've a Management Structure that works for the benefit of it's own managers in it , rather than actually running things hence the defensiveness , can't kill the goose that lays the golden egg and people thinking they're idiots .

RM must love this , ROMEC v Processing , doing :lfo "s job for him . Well Done !, No need for the Hellfail or PMC spin machine here ? as the "voice" of Senior `/Area Mgt .

Yes you are right, there is more to life than RM. However, I as we are posting on a RM chat forum, I rather naively believed this would be the ideal place to discuss any RM issues I thought valid. How ordain of me.
Yes, life is grossly unfair. Surprisingly I knew that before I came on this forum, so I don’t really need to be repeatedly told. I’m beginning to see just how unfair life can get on this forum. Posters holding an alternate point of view are constantly criticized, mocked and bullied. Just because we deem something unfair, and life is unfair, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be challenged or least of all discussed on a forum. That is hardly a reason.
Again, no one is forcing anyone to read this thread. A lot of people seem to be enjoying the debate now though, at the very least a good 0.1%. Would it be to much to ask, to perhaps respect that some posters my find this an important and interesting topic of discussion.

There is more to life than the post office, Norbet?. Good job I quoted you first before you completely deleted your previous message and replaced it. This is a handful people on a forum having a debate over a difference of opinion. It is not Romec and Processing going head to head. This forum needs a varied voice, just to keep us in the real world. It is the people who disagree with us who force us to question our opinions and feelings, and think of the real reasons we justify them. Not one person on this thread has given me a decent reason why IMP staff can't be doing work whilst they're talking, texting, eating, drinking, throwing, puzzling. Some of the answers I've recieved to my posts are:

Should we just stand and look into space?
The night shift doing inward is diffrent a bit more busy.
The staff on your IMP must be pros as our team is, to make the time to do what you say cos if you do you will become a willing horse and they will become a ruck sack
Its a Mundane job and we all need insentives to work.
Anyone who shows any common sense or initiative is a mug
Oh and my favourite - In short i think 99.9% of members would say who gives a f***

The list goes on.....

Can I suggest, and not just to Norbet, embrace any post that states the contrary to your beliefs and use it to reinforce them. Or are they that flimsy they cab be easily broken?

the problem is the culture which as you state is poor , who is responsible for that culture , is it a who came first .the chicken or the egg? scenario? ,
has this rejected by most businesses Top Down , Command & Control 70's style or the Command & Ignore relative done anything to motivate people to take more pride & be more professonial.

Have RM's management got the people skills to do this ? ,

is the arbitary , rudementary Cof C policy which would be more at home in a banana republic doing anything about it ? , why is their so much resentment & bitterness.

Alan doesn't want people worrying about such trifling matters, by playing divide and rule it deflects attention away from that regimented style . Hence the Alan would love all this remark . If AL can split all the functions up . it'll be all the more easier to do so.

I don't know what the "obvious" might be, don't know what "tactics" you're referring to, sure I'm not a troll, and positive I'm not a "screw" either.
Now, are you going to answer the question I asked, or a you just going to pigeon-hole yourself as just another typically angry semi-literate of the type who invariably balls' up this type of forum?

don't play the innocent with me , that's a trot tactic that "Who Me ? " routine , you seem to slate antagonise & insult opgs enough turning things into a Romec V RM battle with your stuck up/ superior & arrogant attitude, is that obvious enough ? , others see right through your condescending patronising manner , do us all a favour and go to PMC as you obviously regard yourself to be far better than everyone else on here , you've the same attitude as trolls & screws -nothing but a stuck up verbal bully , I'm surprised noone has given you something to go sick for at work with that attitude .
