Mail is projected to continue to decline to 4bn pa by 2027. Staff and mail volume have historically tracked very close to 10,000 per 1 billion. We dropped to 81,000 last month. Take a look at half your colleagues and realise they (and you) won't be there by the end of the decade.
What mail is expected to fall too and what it actually does will likely be two different things, in amongst all this we forget that this company has a obligation to us, the public, to deliver mail and parcels under the conditions of the USO and they are well aware of it.
While nobody polices what they do we are shafted and the public are as well, which is and always has been the weak point for RM and yet nobody really takes them to task and the odd few million fine from ofcom is just chump change to the idiots that run this company.
If this is the modern way of running companies the whipping and beatings can't be far away.
I know i paint a dire picture but i still find it very difficult to see us become this monstrosity of a company.
Wonder how much mail it is with d2ds included as we are getting 3 on a weekly basis
D2D is dropping off. I can go a few weeks without getting any in the post. When I do get any it's normally 3 at most, just 2-3 years ago it would have been 5-6 items
Left last year after 36 years paying subs to the union.when I needed the unions help at local and national level the bastard's turned there back on me and dropped me like a stone.i regret ever giving them a penny.too many but not all reps in it for themselves
To generalise rather than comment on the post above, many expect the CWU (or any other union) to perform miracles in getting management decisions, rules, etc overturned when all those unions are there for is to ensure the set rules are followed.
Similarly with company policies and plans. The union is there to ensure employees are given due consideration when change is proposed, not change the direction the company is intending to go.
That said, the CWU have always been a shite union ever since the dinosaurs of the UCW took over the far better NCU some years back. All fine talk but little real action.
Hey mjd24, I'm a trade unionist through and through and to be honest the CWU are a bunch of charlatans. Ask your fellow British workers at BT. They enabled the Royal Mail arm of GLS to save millions of pounds at our expense during the strikes, and what did we get out of it? Worse T&C's and 17 days less pay
I can't understand Why anyone would happily return to work for Royal Mail??
There are plenty of better paid jobs about if your willing to make the jump, with a hell of a lot less stress, bullying and harassment.
I think the biggest problem people have is actually feeling confident enough to get out!
The money isn't great, the work/life balance is pretty poor and likely to get worse, and everyone you see and speak to is completely disillusioned with the place!
Would any of you actually recommend working for Royal Mail to anyone?? I'm pretty sure you wouldn't..
For full timers on the good contracts they actually get around £27.5k before any overtime. There aren’t any jobs out there that pay as well, without the so called stress. If there are, then name them.
No, but I don't think we are going to be any better off with the union in future. Let's be honest, the CWU was strongest in public ownership and that is what initially gave us our generous terms and conditions. Since privatisation, our Union doesn't call the shots anymore so demanding a no strings attached pay rise during the last dispute put the CWU in the stickiest situation since sticky the stick insect got stuck on a sticky bun. The Union were forced to capitulate with an agreement that pushed through massive revisions, longer hours, punitive attendance policies and a two-tier workforce.
It could have obviously been much worse but there will be more to come. RM has achieved many of its objectives and is constantly pushing through with more changes that the Union can only send strongly worded letters about, and then acknowledge. It's not about a race to the bottom anymore, it's become more of a sprint.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

This job 97% of the time isn't too stressful....but it's stressful as hell on the odd occasion. The exhaustion is worse though. How many jobs are there out there where you are walking 10 miles a day, or even doing something physically exhausting for most of the day. You might not go home stressed in this job, but you will go home exhausted with your legs aching for the rest of the day....week.....year.

I understand what youre saying, but my point would be - dont let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

That's another thing Norris. The CWU once pushed for a permanent shorter working week with no loss in pay as part of their Four pillars agreement. They knew automation was going to allow Royal Mail to make decent profits in future by increasing productivity and they wanted staff to have a shorter working week to compensate. However, we will now have to work longer hours out on delivery in the winter to compensate for the shorter week in the summer.
But let's just appreciate the good that we already have - we will all be getting leaner and fitter than ever before!

I'd be careful what you wish for guys, Great lets get rid of the Union ..... You'll be able to afford an extra cup of overpriced coffee.
Then what's going to happen? Suddenly Royal Mail are going to become a Benevolent, Compassionate and Understanding Employer? My Arse they will, they'll turn into an ever more greedy bunch of bastards, and our jobs will become even more intolerable!
I look forward to all the posts on here saying, "If only we had some sort of organisation that could TRY and rein in these power crazy idiots"!
