Again, this coronavirus is novel. It hasn't just appeared, but it has just jumped species, and it is different enough from other coronaviruses that the human population has absolutely no immunity. This is why it's spreading like wildfire, and causing significant issues to Healthcare systems. Take Lombardy in Italy, one of the richest and most well prepared area's with one of the highest rated medical departments, including teaching hospitals etc. It was completely overwhelmed by the outbreak, far too many people with respiratory failure all at the same time, to the point where they had to prioritise giving respirators to those with the highest chance of survival.

Note the most recent Public Health England leaked document states in the next 12 months, they expect 80% of the population to contract this disease, with upto 15% of those requiring hospital treatment (7.9 million people) with an exptected mortality rate of 1% that's half a million people dead, even with the absolute best outcome and a 0.6% morality rate, that's still hundreds of thousands. The NHS has intensive care unit capacity for only a fraction of those expected to require hospitalisation, and not even close to enough respirators.

So downplaying this because it's just another coronavirus, really is one of the dumbest things you can do. The common cold is a coronavirus. It doesn't kill 20% of people over 80 & 10-15% of people over 70.

When they say step back 2 metres from the customer, is there no concern & wellbeing of the posties when they have sit side by side in the van? It about time Royal Mail did the decent thing & suspended all mail & parcel delivery’s until further notice.

Not gonna happen, if anything we'll get even busier with everyone ordering online. Plus and most importantly, not everyone has received their council tax bill
yet. ;-)

This is what they're telling the punters..

Signing for and receiving items
In order to protect both our people and customers as much as possible, we will not be handing over our hand-held devices to customers to capture signatures. Postmen and women will instead log the name of the person accepting the item. This will apply to all deliveries that require a signature.

Additionally, for all customers (including those who are self-isolating) where we need to deliver any parcel that won’t fit through your letterbox, we will place your item at your door. Having knocked on your door, we will then step aside to a safe distance while you retrieve your item. This will ensure your item is delivered securely rather than being left outside.

If you are unable to come to the door at all we will issue a ‘Something for You’ card, advising of other ways you can arrange to get your item. For example, by getting a friend or family member to collect the parcel from our local Customer Service Point on your behalf. In this situation, and to keep your mail as secure as possible, they will need to bring along the card we left you and a form of ID in the name of the person the item is addressed to. Full information on acceptable forms of ID can be found hereOpens in a new window.

Contingency plans
In the event we need to close one of our units, this decision would be made in line with Public Health England guidance. Royal Mail has many years’ experience of contingency planning for a number of different scenarios. We will follow the Government’s advice and work closely with the relevant authorities.

We have extensive experience in being able to quickly deploy business contingency plans so we continue to provide customers with access to our services and their mail.

I doubt they had any contingency plans in place for something like this, so more bull from the top.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

I'd be surprised if they DIDN'T have any contingency plans in place for a major pandemic, Coronavirus or otherwise...
