Well, I will put myself in the snivelling little s**t category because his comments go over my threshold of tolerance and acceptance. I guess people's tolerances are different but I hope most have at least one, somewhere, where it's acceptable to go running to management.

What everyone is missing is this guy was a care assistant for ambulance passengers. I imagine the lady who reported him was worried he might be giving substandard care to black patients/passengers if he is openly racist - which she possibly took him to be. What he said may reflect his feelings about ethnic minorities and in his position of care that's a dangerous thing. No he wasn't officially sacked for that concern but that's the underlying reason no doubt.
Yes it might be the case he was using the term as he had heard it used down the pub by other blacks and would never discriminate against a minority patient but maybe the fellow worker who reported him didn't understand that. So she may have acted with the best interest of patients at heart rather than revengefully.
