re: Absolutely no way a USO will be served during a national
Absolutely no way a USO will be served during a national strike. I know this for a fact as I was an Ops Manager during a previous strike. There are means and ways to get a reasonable chunk of mail out each day with relatively few managers/posties etc...
The figure of £300M per day is completely wrong as well. Either you have quoted incorrectly or the person in Birmingham was talking b*llocks.
RM aqctually has a really good Head of Public Relations person and they are good at getting their articles into friendly business media. It will be interesting how the red tops present the situation. I assume the Sun will be anti-union, and the mirror more sympathetic.
I've rarely come across a paper that represents what I call a well balanced view.
I think we all know there will be a YES vote, so it's about next steps I reckon

Was just about to say the exact same thing. They manage to turn a news article into a dig at the unions and Labour. My old man brings the Daily Mail home every day despite him being staunchly anti-Tory. This is the same kind of crap I'll be reading this summer then.IWW Fellow Worker wrote:'The Torygraph' more like.DirtyHarry wrote:The Telegraph , Britain's favourite toilet paper.

One thing that's always missing from these reports that causes concern. Is it just selective reporting or a failure by the union to mention the strings that are attached to this piss-poor pay offer? Okay, maybe Joe Public won't understand all the ins and outs of 'teamworking' bu the covering of sickness within a section without any pay or the handing of additional D2D items for nothing are two points that surely should be shouted about....I know there are other issues too but it seems whatever report you read/hear is always just about the 2.5% and nothing else.

re: I have managed a DO during a strike
It is possible to deliver Specials and business mail. Recorded is also possible.
It is also possible to change some of the DO sorting to postcode sortation as this makes it easier for people who haven't worked in a DO before. It is not the most efficient approach otherwise it would be adopted normally. It also means that delivery times are slightly longer. However getting lost in a geographically defined area is a little easier to recover than ovwer a larger area.
Business mail is also fairly easy to sort for people who have not done it before and you can get reasonably large volumes out the office and to customers each day. I did this for a few weeks and got a round going that delivered 30+ bags in about 45mins.
I know this isn't necessarily the information you want to hear. My point is that a service can be provided but anyone thinking that a USO will be provided is barking mad.
I should be a postal consultant and earn Crozier type wages! :) only joking he earns peanuts (big ones though!)
F0zz on the mushrooms again!

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

re: You raise an interesting point
Postman you raise an interesting point as when as was managing during a postal strike the processing part wasn't on strike (I think?)
You say in another post that it is illegal to bring in agency staff during a strike? Can someone elaborate on that as this is new to me.
Also a 'yes' mandate in recent time normally means a one day strike on a date that causes most impact or co-insides with an extra long weekend around a bank holiday. If that is the case then it is quite feasible to deliver considerable chunks of business mail as well as registered mail.
I don't want to pop the strike balloon, but unless the strike is a concerted all-out strike for a period of time it won't massively cripple the country. However, I am willing to be proved wrong. I don't have anything to gain or lose to be honest.

all out
i know a lot of people cant do it but an all out strike is the only way to cause max disruption but with cost of living really high and interest rates set to rise again its not really a feasable option but it would really f++k em up

Agency workers and strikes, this is all i can find at the mo. If someone else can try googling it they may get a better result.
Scroll down to page 2 http://www.tuc.org.uk/law/tuc-12891-f0.pdf
I'm sure i read somewhere that the agency gets fined if it supplies workers.

Fozzie im sorry but your talking b****cks, postmans right, when we went out at Christmas they had to put in 150 managers plus temps and the mail still wasnt delivered, and you have to remember that when we came back into work we didnt do overtime so any backlog of mail accumulated even more, theres always ways to put pressure onto management, weve been fighting these b***ards since 98 so were well versed in how to get at them..UNITY IS STRENGTH.
