Ha, Star dust, I thought I'd never hear from you again. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough. I was standing facing the IMP machine, I could see four IMPs, one in front with two beyond that and one behind, from my work area. I did notice behaviour on them all, but I will admit not as clearly as on the IMP in front of me. The IMP in front of me was right in my face, as it were. My task was to face up rejected letters on the IMP. It is not hard to look up and see someone eating, talking, etc... The staff on the IMP I was faced with were so prolific with their non-work activities that, just about every time I looked up, they were doing something, that wasn't work. I did not literally stand and stare for 4hrs at them. How pedantic would you like to get? It was hardly difficult to spot. It’s not like the staff were being subtle or quiet about it.
L Tommo wrote:Good point.... There are always people like this in a MC that are basically PRO PEOPLE WATCHERS.... Like Twitchers but with humans...

Sit there all day watching others while doing feck all themselves.... Then the first thing thay dont like and they jump up and moan...

MAKES ME SICK.. :Sick

OUT
L Tommo, perhaps there are many people like that in MCs. I however am not one. I don't claim to be the hardest worker in RM. I do, however, take pride in the fact that, I start and finish when I'm due to and, in between, I work. Yes, work! Not eat or drink coffee or stand talking. How you have made the jump from that, to me not doing the task assigned to me and doing feck all, beats me. Besides all that I was standing.

It increasingly seems to me that the staffs on the IMPs are unable to justify this, frankly unacceptable, behaviour. So the best thing to do in a situation like that is criticise the person who has pointed this out. Correct?

MMMMMMMM :hmmmm I dont see where i spoke to you and mentioned you Jedi????? I was just commenting on Star dusts point... WHINED YA NECK IN SON.... :wave

If you feel like you have to comment on my comment then YOU might just have a guilt trip going on there PJ????

I am forcing nothing on anyone. I am allowed to state my beliefs. As for my work rate, you can't comment on as you haven't worked with me. I would agree I don't work flat out. I have not claimed the IMP staff don't do their jobs or that they are lazy. I have pointed out that instead of doing non-work activities they could be more productive. I don't think the cleaner idea is practical as the IMP staff are tied to a small area. Although, where I was working, was very messy and I spent a lot of time moving broken boxes, broken equiptment, including a fan and lots of used labels, what had been ripped up and thrown.

Fair enought L Tommo.

Why should I star dust? I am only opening this up for discussion not trying to stop it, personally. This is just a forum. Why not tell me why it shouldn't be stopped or what we gain from it, as originally asked?

No, you are wrong star dust. I have posted this because I wanted to raise the issue. It is not eating at me as much as me starting this thread is eating at you. What people get upto in RM has everything to do with us, the workforce. It is us who depend on this business to provide our income. I do live and let live, but I am still entitled to my opinions, and I will continue to air them. Just because you are a postie, like me, doesn't mean you can do what you like without question. Do you think you can maybe encroach the thread topic now?

a favourte subject of the ppl who CANNOT work on the mech.the very nature of the machine is,that after the staff have tied the machine up,there is a lull and we have to wait for it to fill up again.,consequently, they may fill in that 5 mins orso by,reading a paper, having a coffee, standing having a chat etc etc etc.you ppl only see the calm and not the storm.dear jedi, are you one of the many whom have seen all this, standing around etc and thought i`ll have a slice of that ,and when it came to the crunch, and you had a bash at it,realised it was TOO MUCH WORK FOR YOU AFTER ALL.my persnal favourites are the ex phg who thought it would be easy money and the tpm payment, they too all fell by the wayside.so please jedi, spare a thought for the much maligned mech man yes i too am an imp operator and admire the pkt men,the way they all lash the work in,dont talk to each other, never take turns to go to the toilet in cycles or ciggie breaks, never watch what EVERONE is up to as i am writing this on my laptop the machine behind me is full, lights flashing and there is a distinct smell of burning, but that will have to wait as i am now of to the loo and i dont want to innterupt the other two lads playing kerplunk ! :cuppa ps jedi mines black no sugar lol see ya

Just a quicky whilst I'm in the midst of a lull.

Oh where to start machman? I am not disputing whether or not IMP staff are doing their jobs, never have done never will do. I’ve never claimed it isn’t a hard job, what job in RM isn’t, boring, laborious, dirty, repetitive etc…. What I am asking is - Why during the, ‘five or so minutes lull’ as you put it, do the IMP staff not do something more productive, as oppose to standing around, reading papers, drinking coffee, etc…. Not a hard question, yet a question that seems to elude an answer. It’s just my point of view, machman, just mine.
I have never thought, again as you put it, ‘I’ll have a slice of that’ or ‘I‘ve had a bash‘. I do not work on the packets either. So you don’t have to shout accusations at me. Again, another poster speculates in order to try and gain some sort of victory, as if this forum is a game. Or perhaps you’ve just never bothered to read my posts?
I am curious as to a couple of parts to your argument though. Firstly, you say there is a ‘five minute or so lull’, in which IMP staff, being a law unto themselves, can do what they want. Does this lull also occur at the central feeding part of the machine as well as the sorter part? I just mention this as the operator attending to that part was also reading, texting and often walking over to where I was working to talk to me, whilst I was working. Just to clarify, I worked, he talked.
Secondly, you claim the IMP sorted a recorded figure of mail, I don’t dispute that. However you claim that you and the lads treat this shift exactly like any other night. To me that say’s you did nothing different. Therefore I can only conclude the record figure had nothing to do with you and the lads and more to do with the machine having a good shift, perhaps down to good mail and few breakdowns. As, and it’s your claim, the variable of yourself and your colleagues work rate remained unchanged. Bearing this in mind, I still don’t see why you had to read papers, stand around talking etc….. I expect this argument may be too complex for you and you might just see red instead, so do take deep breaths.
Thirdly, I am very curious as to why there is a want in you to go to the toilet together? Oh! and again, why packet men? The sentence also sounds a bit like packet men s**t on bikes too, lol!
machman wrote: i too am an imp operator and admire the pkt men,the way they all lash the work in,dont talk to each other, never take turns to go to the toilet in cycles
Machman, you may believe you are a law unto yourself, but I think you’ll find you’re JUST a RM employee like us all and what you do and how you do it will ultimately affect us all in the long run. Give it a thought. Oh! nearly forgot, see ya :wave

star dust wrote:Raise it with your manager. :Boo hoo! By the way what does the manager think of his/her staff doing what you say they are doing.
Why should I raise this with my manager, stardust? This is just a forum with topics up for debate. You know yourself there is no reason why IMP staff can’t be doing more work related things whilst in the midst of a lull. After all, I’m sure you couldn’t wait to get into work and tell your mates about this post when you first read it. I can see you all now, desperately trying to think up reasons why you should be allowed to read a paper. I feel like I almost know you now.
And lastly, how on earth do I know what the IMP Manager thinks of all of this. Probably, not very much I imagine. Just like most Managers, until his/her Manager decides they want something done about it all.

why should the imp staff not do what you say they are doing!!!! there are two ways of working on a imp, (1) the staff can work like mad and clear the imp in around 10 mins, then it takes 5/6 mins to fill up then start again.(2) the staff can work at normal pace all night without the 5/6 minutes it takes to fill up. The way they work is upto them as long as they do not stop the imp to clear it out. If the two on the sorter can not agree as to whitch way to work (1) or(2) they do half each, but that is rare. So the 5/6 mins is upto upto the staff to take or leave.

By doing more productive activities the IMP staff could -

*Make a big difference on other sections, the knock on effect from this could even help other shifts.
*Improve quality of service.
*Set an excellent example to other staff, instead of creating contempt amongst staff. I would like to stipulate there is no contempt on my behalf, I am refering to several comments on this this thread.
*Secure their jobs and safeguard employment in their MC by proving and validating their and others worth.
*Show respect and adherence to H&S regulations.

Again, Star dust, I would like to bring this back to the fact that I am not disputing whether or not the IMP staff are doing their jobs. I am disputing, from what I saw to be more than 5/6mins, the excessive talking, texting, eating, reading etc..... that went on, not only on the sorter end but also on the feeding parts of the machine. Now, Star dust, as I have given you some reasons why IMP staff shouldn't, in my opinion, be eating in work time, can you have the decency to give your reason why they should.
