After what seems an eternity work has started on the instillation of a PSM at Medway MC
Talking to our shift manager it’s going to be up and running around the middle of the year
For those in the know
1-Are they any good ?
2-How were the duties allocated to work on it?
3-Do they sort inward and outward/1c-2c?
4-Do they sort T24/T48?
5-Did the installation of a machine trigger VRs at the plant?
Another question. Will there be any benefit whatsoever for delivery offices?
Nope. Just to cut hours from MCs. We often get lots of sleeves and yorks from other MCs that are a right mix of normal and Tracked. I bet if we wee to compare a list of MCs we get them from, it'd tie up quite well with the list of MCs that currently have PSMs

1 Fantastic with clearly marked easy to read no return address so basically the easiest stuff to manually sort anything else expect lots of kick out to manual
2 Those on Manual Sorting/Company Favourites first choice Still waiting on training 8 years down the line whilst Casuals People who transferred in have been trained in the meantime
3 Yes
4 See Point 1
5 No but nothing does at Greenford or a Resign for that matter
If I am not mistaken Medway are getting a newer version of the PSM from a different supplier which may be a good thing. I think currently only Tyneside have this newer type of PSM.
Do Tracked items that go through the PSM still have to be manually scanned beforehand?
I would have thought that the PSMs would have the ability to scan Tracked items otherwise there'd be no point in putting them through a PSm as if they had to be scanned, then they may as well be sorted at the same time. We don't have a PSM, for Tracked we have a Primary Sort and a Secondary Sort. Basically the different DOs are split into two groups. The ones with the most items are on the Primary Sort with the rest being on the Secondary Sort. The Primary Sort has a sleeve that items to go over to the Secondary Sort go into

Aren't the PSMs now overkill considering that most parcels will soon be going to the new parcel hubs as they come online?
If you believe Royal Mail the forecasted mail will continue to increase meaning psms will have work to process.
They point to one of the NW MCs who need a second psm due to their increased workload.
If the forecasted mail does not arrive then all bets are off I'd have thought...
They also said mail wouldn't be taken away from MCs and they are taking mail so not sure what we say is worth much.

A lot of the outputs on the PSMs will eventually go unused with 3 needed for the hubs and however many for the DOs. If we had a PSM with the hubs online we'd only need about 25 outputs for the PSM
