Hi everyone.
I am a new starter been working for RM for 5 weeks. I’m employed as postman with driving but on a PM shift specifically for parcels.
I have been doing walking rounds as well but have never been trained on doing this.
I have been walking rounds normally done by a van as there are no vans left. Today I was unable to finish my round as previously I have been told that I must be back to the depot by 5.30. Today I left nearly a bag of mail on a walk as I needed to get back by 5.30.
When I arrived back I was told that it was a sackable offence? I said I’d go back and finish the round but thought hey wanted me
Back by 5.30.
Can someone please clarify this for me?
Do you have to finish a postal round? What’s the policy on coming back with mail. Is it different to coming back with parcels?
I’m only on a 3 month contract and love the job so want to stay but now I’m worried I won’t get it renewed?
Thanks

Main points. You do not have to do overtime - it is voluntary.
You must tell a manager, with a witness present, as soon as you become aware you may not complete.

Unsure of policy on not finishing round
I have just read the linked overrunning procedure statement. It is noticeable that there is not a single reference to posties that are willing to overrun and work beyond their duty time actually being paid for the additional work being done. Also making a written list of posties who are or not willing to go over their time appears to be something that could or should be completed on a daily basis. Does this not seem a little intimidating and threatening towards staff.
Presuming this is still the current standard procedure would it not be fair to state that this agreement is poorly worded. There should be equal emphasis on payment for hours of work completed as well as the regulations regarding a daily attempt to deliver at every address point.
