Newbie and a little positivity

So tomorrow is the end of my third week with RM and I have to say I am loving it!
Yes it's hard work and so different to what I expected but I think I'm getting the hang of it now

All the people in my office, well the ones I've been in contact with, are just lovely. Love the banter! I know it's getting busy now but hopefully I'll cope.
I think in every job there are good and bad points (and people) but I'm so happy right now

Glad that you are enjoying it so far but be aware that sometimes just when you think that you have cracked it managers, having built up your confidence and speed by leaving you on a walk for a few weeks, have a nasty habit of suddenly pulling the rug from under you and moving you onto new walks or giving you other tasks and expecting you to complete them just as fast as a regular postie (they seem to forget that you are still learning for at least the first 6 months)

Sadly I've seen loads of newbies leave after a few weeks when they start getting the extra pressure put on them.

Don't worry too much about Christmas, it gets v busy obviously, but it can be ok if you have a well organized office

(Some do exist apparently)

Stick with it, despite all the moaning on here we all turn up for work the next day so it cannot be that bad can it ?

I don't want to burst your bubble too much but I agree with gt... your manager will almost certainly have been going very easy on you and you won't yet have got a true reflection of just what is expected of you, how much you'll get messed around or how you'll be treated when you tell them you'll be going over, or even worse cutting off.

I wish you well my friend ,but as you can see many old guys on here and others who have been with this firm are a tad cynical with how things are and how we are treated,you may well not know any different,but if you should be lucky to be in an office with good moral,fairness and hassle free,and without the culture of fear,from above which tends to spoil a day’s work,we all try to be positive and have the banter,but seem to be penalised for being too efficient,too conscientious,and too cost efficient,while nearby offices haemorrhage overtime,high staff turn over,high complaints etc etc,I think we are saving money for the whole of our sector at times.but hey,maybe to quote my boss after 36 years it ain’t the job for you anymore,I wou grab evr and be gone in a heartbeat! I've been in the job 3 months and I once thought as you do,
But then the stress and rage kicks in when your manager expects the impossible and hassles you when you don't compete a new walk in the same time as veteran .

Stephas - it is nice to see such positivity after starting and I hope it continues for you. I am a relative newbie to the company (7 years) and I generally find it a good job and don’t have a problem like many seem to do maybe I’m in a good office too (although I have recently moved office and found both fine although very different).

I think you’ll find a lot of the negative comments are from postmen with much longer service and I completely understand that many changes have happened over the years for the worse.

Good luck in the job, keep enjoying it and once you get through Christmas you’ll be able to handle anything!

Thanks for all your comments and I completely understand them all! I shall definitely follow up when I've been in the job longer. The guy who started the same day as me quit this morning!
I'm looking forward to my Friday, Saturday off and Monday Tuesday next week!

Good to hear you’re enjoying it. Sounds like you’re in one of the few good offices out there. As others have stated most new staff get messed about from day 1, part timers expected to work full time. Shoved on different walks with little to no training and expected to be as quick as those who have been there for years and/or don’t do the job properly. They usually quit after a few weeks, and who can blame them!

I dont want to put you off,but I used to love being a postie,even looked forward to going to work,loved the cameraderie and banter from my fellow posties,but in the end the awful treatment dished out by the managers made me hate the job I had loved for so many years.
They seem to pick on certain people,especially aiming for the older workers,many who have been there a long time,and grind them down so they leave,and you just feel like you have been thrown on the scrapheap.Loyalty means nothing anymore.
Sorry to sound pessimistic,hopefully you have got a decent DOM,more than what I had,and you will be treated with respect.Good luck anyway

I obviously don't know your background but most that have worked elsewhere do enjoy the job. Virtually everybody I speak to who have done other jobs before Royal Mail like it. It's like somebody else said, for those that have been with the company many years it's more difficult because of how much it's changed and there's more expected of 'em nowadays. Can't be that bad though as staff turnover is still very small for such a massive company.

Glad you're enjoying it anyway. I have to say I'm long past the point of loving it haha, I used to though. It's now just a job but I still enjoy it, good people mostly and once you're out the office free to do as you like pretty much. Good time of year to start too, if you like it through Christmas you'll be fine. Newbies tend to quit after a short period of time or you never leave haha.
