It seems to me that the reason behind 2nd class mail has been lost.
I don't know for certain but I believe that historically 2nd class mail was cheaper to send because of the logistics of moving and sorting it all as 1st class.
It appears to me now that 2nd class mail is sorted along side 1st class and then held for a day before delivery. Surely significant efficiency saving could be made if 2nd class mail were promoted to 1st class on less busy days. For example I usually finish early on a Tuesday and late on a Wednesday, why not deliver Wednesdays 2nd class on Tuesday?
I know RM want to keep the services seperate (or phase 2nd class out altogether) but I don't think they will lose custom if some 2nd class is delivered a day early.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

We currently have a mailing going from the local council to every house in the area. The office is stuffed full of the bloody things - all second class. Since I pay my council tax, its me who is paying for this second class service. I have to ask what that actually means since these items will not be delivered before next Wednesday - they are simply too heavy. This is not a one off, the same magazine is posted out every month and it usually takes over a week to get them all out of the office.
Is this right? Does that 2 at the top of them mean anything at all?
