How to deal with Specials when doing a town walk.

Post by madelin4 »

We have been told at our office that we MUST keep any specials we get on our person the whole way round the duty..I.E. if i have a special for middle of duty one must carry it etc etc..I dont understand why we cant just leave them in drop boxs?? What r they saying that drop boxes not safe?? or if a person uses there car can they not leave it there?? I wud of thought that if a criminal knows that posties are instructed to carry special deliverys on them at all times , wud that not make us a bigger target ? fair enough all mail is important but specials just mayb a bit more value if stolen...I had a special this morning about 3/4 size of a shoe box 35 mins into duty, lucky i got them in or wud of had it the whole duty!!! wud like to hear others thoughts on this.. :Very Happy

You're supposed to carry them in your pouch and as you change pouches, you swith the Special from one pouch to the next. I remember a postman having his pouch stolen, but as he had the specials in his coat pocket, they were safe. He ended up getting told off for not having them in his pouch. Royal Mail managers eh? I've always kept them on my person (size permitting) in an inside pocket since day one Madelin4, whoever said we should put them in a pouch was talking out of their armpit so ignored it. :speak to the hand Largish ones try and get them to give them to a driver, pouch drop boys take all the large town specials in my office, don't leave 'em in car your insurance probably wouldn't cover it or any mail getting pinched. . .

I will continue putting specials in my pouch boxes reagrdless of these rules. One of the town centre jobs I covered last week had 31 signers in total, 20 of those were specials, where exactly am I meant to carry all these at once seeing as most of the companies are towards the end of the walk.

More stupidity from RM bosses.

I was under the impression they must be kept with you at all times. If you have too many or some are bulky ask your managers permission for them to be left in pouch boxes. That way if any are stolen then you don't have to worry about not following procedure as your manager gave you the OK. Remember to get a witness though as they are Royal Mail managers and can lie their socks off like nobody else.

When I did my initial training(a 3 day stint in a classroom 6 years ago--dont think they do this now) I was told that specials
must be carried at all times!!!
1st delivery duty I did I had 5 similar items to yours to be delivered,no way was I carrying them the whole round so picked them up at drop boxes---have done the same ever since,so much for the training eh!!

In my unit we only take 5 specials out at a time,it's seen as a security risk to carry any more. This was introduced by RM IB a few years back.Even if there's more than 5 for the same place we only carry 5 of them, the rest will go out seperately on the vans.

I have known bike duties to take out up to 20, usually cash to travel agents. It will be interesting if someone gets robbed who gets to be blamed.

Blimey mate! It would almost be worth getting a mate to knock you on the head and going half with him on the proceeds once you got out of hospital!

It's got to look a bit convincing. The PSNI are no mugs you know! My cousin was a sergeant in the RUC and they know a bit about head injuries over there!

if memory serves me correct i remember this also think its a national agreement or maybe just guidelines but i def remember using this when we have 2nd dlys and we stopped the guy going out with loads of specials to firms and shops in our town centre
and got it put on a van dly for safety and security reasons
