TROOPS at a perilous remote posting in Afghanistan had a new symbol of Britishness to boost their morale yesterday — the country’s first PILLAR BOX.
The shiny red letter collector — nicknamed Rosie — was erected in the lawless desert province of Helmand courtesy of the Royal Mail.
Delighted staff sergeant David Capper, who asked for it to be shipped out, said: “It’s created a lot of excitement. Mail is the one thing soldiers crave.
“I thought it would be a good idea to get something to remind people living on the camp of home. We are in a very remote area and the living conditions here can be harsh. So it is a welcome sight.â€
