Allan Leighton, 49, has come a long way since his days as a Lloyds Bank clerk straight out of North Oxfordshire Poly. These days, the Hereford boy who sold Asda to the Yanks for £6.7 billion is trying to sort out the chaos which is Britain's Post Office. That's when he's not chairing Lastminute.com, Bhs, housebuilder Wilson Connolly and fitness chain Cannons, sitting on the board of Dyson and BSkyB, or sorting out a boardroom brawl at Leeds United (yes, he is a non-exec there too). Here he tells Growing Business why small is beautiful, how he would like to be fired and how he really feels about leaving former Kingfisher chief exec Sir Geoff Mulcahy at the altar in 1999. :lfo :lfo :cfo :cfo :nana

He sold Asda to the Yanks, and who are those Yanks, the're Wal-Mart. A company with a very aggresive anti-union stance, who also make disgusting profits while paying there workers poverty wages. http://www.walmartmovie.com/ Watch this documentary if you can and see what kind of people Leighton sold Asda to. This could be a glimpse of the future for us if we let him get his way.

that's what we are fighting about really just wish the public could see it and unite against the oppressive 'dictatorship'

That's exactly it mate. Since 1979 and the arrival of the Snatch, 'modernisation' has come to represent the very opposite of it's original meaning. These capitalists are far too clever to actually cut wages by dropping the hourly rate as their Victorian forefathers did. So, the just give pay increases well under the rate of inflation and the same result is achieved. All those strike breakers and those who voted 'NO' and in favour of a deal with more strings than the Berlin Philharmonic obviously want a return to the days when diseases such as TB and rickets were very common, because this is what we're heading for.

I'm no expert on "management talk" or "corporate jargon", but I think when they say "mordernisation" they really mean taking us back to Victorian work conditions.

I'm sure Adam, Alan and most of the Labour party leadership would love to bring back workhouses and stick all us proles in them.

The Government are always going on about how much more money they are putting into Health and Education. Where I live, the local hospital has had seven out of eight wards closed down since October, one secondary school and three primary schools closed down and two weeks ago, the Labour Council has promised to close another secondary school, demolish another recently built secondary school and re-open it two miles away. It's all about wringing more and more money out of the services we use. You could add public transport to this. Bus de-regulation in 1986 has just meant virtually abandoning rural areas and severely reducing services in towns and cities after 18.00. Lots of people don't mind any of this though. If they did, they would stop voting these brigands into power.

While I can agree with some of your comments , I could never bring myself to vote tory and as for the liberals, so there is not really any alternative.

The alternative is not voting at all and letting them know we don't trust them. They'll cry and call it 'voter apathy' but it isn't apathy. It's antipathy, which is the best response for these self-interested creeps. The idea that Labour will represent the interests of the working class has been proved to be a myth. At home and abroad Labour has shown itself to be every bit as bad as the Tories. It shouldn't be a surprise as both parties are run by and on behalf of the middle-class.

My brother works in the NHS and he says a lot of money is invested... except it's wasted on absolutely pointless pen pushing and bureaucracy! It currently employs 1.33m people, making it the world's fourth largest employer after the Chinese Army, Indian Railways and Wal-Mart. The full-time equivalent figure for 2005 was about 980,000 staff. The government has become obsessed with getting 50% of the population into university because they don’t see any future in blue-collar jobs because of far cheaper competition in India, China etc. So they've invented all these pointless jobs where the people don't create anything or fulfil any kind of meaningful purpose.

I have to agree with you. My wife is a nurse so I know all about these drones in suits carrying a clipboard about between Monday and Friday, but whose jobs are so vital they can have Saturday and Sunday off. A bit like our management in that respect.

Spoiling your ballot paper is a better option. All spoilt ballot papers are kept and their numbers are recorded. The candidates can ask to see them and often do when there's a close result - so make sure you leave them a nice little message.

I have to agree

Not voting at all means that you don't care about what form of riff-raff you get.

Spoil your ballot paper and you are saying that none of the available candidates are good enough.

If there's enough spoilt papers then it cannot be dismissed as a fluke
