STRIKING post workers yesterday accused Royal Mail of dirty tricks by using taxis and private cars to deliver letters.
The Communication Workers Union claimed management resorted to "desperate" measures in the face of "overwhelming" support for the walkout, which crippled services.
Union officials said the vast majority of their 130,000 members backed the pay strike, losing around £60 each.

But the company claimed support was "patchy", with up to 60 per cent of staff working in some areas.
Pickets outside Royal Mail's Mount Pleasant centre in London claimed managers were bundling mail into taxis and courier vans in an effort to deliver priority post.
CWU leader Billy Hayes said: "They are going to desperate lengths to try to get some deliveries out.
"It seems they would rather fork out for taxis and courier firms than pay our members what they deserve."
But a Royal Mail spokesman denied the union's claim.
The union is expected to set more strike dates when it meets next Tuesday, unless management improves a 2.5 per cent pay offer.
Mr Hayes said: "The company has been in denial about the workforce rejecting the pay offer.
"They are now in denial about the overwhelming support of postal workers taking strike action.
"It is time for them to get real and start negotiating."
Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier said: "The union don't seem to realise how damaging the strike is to us and our customers.
"The simple fact is our rivals pay their people 25 per cent less and they're 40 per cent more efficient.
"These challenges won't go away and the longer we put off change the greater the threat to Royal Mail."
The company said workers stood to collect an £800 cash dividend on top of the 2.5per cent rise if the business hit its targets this year.
But CWU deputy leader Dave Ward accused management of trying to drive down wages by 25 per cent.

In the paper version there was a pic of a manager loading up a white van with bags.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Royal mail will throw money at anything if they think they are losing face, when Burslem was out at christmas they threw loads of money at our office in an attempt to break us, they paid managers from all over the country to come to our office some they paid overnight accomadation for, they were paying £900 a day for food and drink for casual and managers, they hired loads of vans, we have 110 staff at our office and most days over christmas they had an extra 150 casuals plus managers delivering, the b***ards have got money they just dont want to give it us.
