Some dodgy posh website.
The UK's Direct Marketing Association (DMA) is set to meet with environment minister, David Miliband, next month in an effort to discover the full extent of the government's waste strategy.
Mr Miliband announced last week that he plans to tackle the problem of excessive waste in the UK and pointed to the direct mail industry as an area in which more can be done to improve the environment, with proposals for an 'opt-in' scheme for homeowners being proposed.
Such an initiative would result in direct mailers having to ensure much higher standards of data quality so as to prevent marketing material being sent to addresses that have not opted in to receive direct mail.
The DMA is keen to discover how such a scheme would work in practice, while the government is seeking industry support for the plans.
As such, the two sides are now planning to meet in July to put their views across and deliver a workable solution for the future, Print Week reports.

re: The DMA is the pro-lobby group
The DMA are your pay masters. They own you, not the CWU, not anyone else.
The DMA is like the pro-tobacco lobby. They represent and promote the use of direct mail. Direct mail is where most of the growth in mail has been for years. The home delivery market is expanding, but direct mail M1, M2 and M3 account for easily 50% of the market. Can't be bothered to check the figures at the moment.
Without them promoting this form of media/communication the industry would collapse
Milliband is right though that rubbish out of date databases is costing huge amounts in waste, but also generates lots of extra revneue.
It was probably the DMA who also pushed for liberalisation so that prices would come down and encourage more business to either start using, increase, or transfer over to direct mail.
This country is run by business and Milliband is fighting with wolves!!!

As someone who does recycle this is good news
but
As a postman this is bad - less mail = less postpeople.
I'm going to sit on the fence on this one.

Most people find direct mail annoying but tolerate it (it's easy enough to put the envelopes into the recycling bins).
The biggest problem that I have with it is the fact thay the companies never update their databases, they just keep sending out the junk to people who have moved, died or to houses that have been demolished.
If they were forced to maintain accurate databases it would mean that there should be less dead mail for us to kill. Also I have seen a large amount of mailsort without return addresses. A return address should become mandatory.
Mail addressed to 'the occupier' should not be permitted.
An opt out already exists in the form of the mail preference service (this only works with companies that the household has never dealt with).
