But the preamble and context to the current impasse was the CWU heralding a “groundbreaking agreement” being reached and telling its members the current talks were really a mere formality to give effect to the massive wins supposedly secured by the CWU. They now admit there were no wins.

To be fair to the CWU what else could they really say, as they could hardly say "whilst EPG have surprised us by agreeing to signed an agreement, we don't trust them to abide to the agreement once the takeover is completed" even if behind closed doors they were saying that between them.
