Newbie contracted hours
I've been told 30 hours is my contract which i think was 8:12 start. But told to start at 7:28 and claim overtime up until 8:12. Is this common? Anyone else experienced this. Everyone is full time except for the newbies that are on 30 hours but claim overtime up to 35 hours.

Thank you! Though I do no need 35 hours at least. I suppose they don't contract 35 hours so they can pay less sick pay and holiday pay

Make sure to keep a note of the overtime, don't just trust your manager to get it right,Newpoet wrote: ↑12 Oct 2025, 17:42I know! Royal mail is so weird. My 32 years advice for any new startersClappedoutpostie wrote: ↑12 Oct 2025, 17:15Yes it very common, wouldn’t happen at a normal company.
Know your hours ( every duty has a start and finish time )
know your pay rate
know your holiday entitlement
Don’t start early don’t work over unless you are getting paid ( you are not a charity volunteer)
Keep a paper trail of all overtime done
Go to a senior man in your link or office for advice if you feel something is off
Always ask if you’re not sure , people generally don’t bite and you’ll soon realise who the helpful ears are
Don’t feel the pressure to do more over your contracted hours unless you want too
( yes I know some will say easy for someone with 30 yrs to say that but if you become a doormat early on management will walk all over you )
Finally try to avoid the I’m not here to make friends line if you try and fit in you will enjoy it more

Don't think any of us on new contracts in our office takes a unpaid break, we even have to come in 20mins earlier so that we can finish the same time as the old contract posties, otherwise we were told we have to stay 20mins later.. No idea where the unpaid break is even meant to fit in

So you come in 20 mins early then you're supposed to stop working for 20mins for your break part way through the shift that way you spend the correct amount of time working.

Re: Newbie contracted hours
Wanna hear something "funny"? So I joined after October 2022 and am on "30 hours over 5 days, Mon - Sun, 0600-2200) contract, not to mention working at a location different to my usual if the business calls for it.
So, I was told in early November last year that from week of November 11, all part-timers will be up-lifted to 37:00 hours per week for the Christmas period. So far so good. Come my pay for November, I am still only paid for 30 hours, despite having worked 7:00 hours over from the week of November 11. When queried, the manager simply shrugged and said - oh they've delayed the 37:00 hour week to week of November 18 - I thought I had mentioned it?
Nope - he defo didn't. So basically they lied and withheld information to get us to work over-time. How low is that? And how do they expect us to trust them after that?

Re: Newbie contracted hours
If the manager refuses to pay you the extra 7 hours after he's agreed you could work them why didn't you put in a grievance or contact HR as I assume the PDA/SISO stats will show that you were working, so the manager wouldn't have a leg to stand on?
