As Royal Mail have been told it can deliver second-class letters every other weekday and not on Saturdays to help cut costs by the industry regulator, we take a look back through the archives at the postal service.
As we all send less mail today, Ofcom have announced reform to the Universal Service Obligation (USO) is needed. UK households up and down the country are now sending fewer letters every year.
Following Ofcom's consultation, the Royal Mail will be able to deliver Second Class letters on alternate weekdays from July 28, still being within three working days of collection from Monday to Friday.

We look back through the archives before the Royal Mail moved out of their base in the city centre to Newtown and they were based in what is now the Mailbox.
A light railway would run the mail from New Street Station under the city to the site in Royal Mail Street. The tunnels still exist today and can be visited on certain open days.
