We have been told if we have a accident which we are fault we will be getting a 2 year serious surely this couldn't be right

An at fault van accident that you didn't report would make more sense, or an at fault accident where you were speeding, but an at fault accident where you misjudged a 3 point turn and knocked against someone's fence causing minor damage - surely not.
