Re: Locking yourself out of van
Turning the engine off, leaving keys in the ignition, closing the door and the automatic lock kicks in I think - don't try it!

Re: Locking yourself out of van
I haven't heard of this happening for years but it was common when we had vans without remote locking.

They’ve brought that stupid yo-yo gadget in attached to van key for exactly this reason.

Re: Locking yourself out of van
My only complaint is the yo-yo devices are very poor quality — I am on my fourth one already. But they’re not at all stupid. I can think of many security and safety reasons why the keys should be tethered to the driver at all times. Perhaps a key reason is it could save you potentially being killed by a drug addict stealing your van and its contents while dragging you along as you try to cling to the bonnet. Extreme, I know, but still…chickenwittle wrote: ↑16 May 2025, 16:50They’ve brought that stupid yo-yo gadget in attached to van key for exactly this reason.

Well, perhaps not that extreme — there was the DPD driver who was killed in a similar scenario not too long ago, wasn’t there?chickenwittle wrote: ↑16 May 2025, 18:15Smoothbackground wrote: ↑16 May 2025, 17:47My only complaint is the yo-yo devices are very poor quality — I am on my fourth one already. Why would you be trying to cling on to the bonnet?Smoothbackground wrote: ↑16 May 2025, 17:47My only complaint is the yo-yo devices are very poor quality — I am on my fourth one already. Re: Locking yourself out of van
I wouldn’t need to do any such thing. My keys are always on my person.
But as we saw in the DPD case, there’s no accounting for how people panic and respond in different ways. Someone might cling on to the bonnet because they realise they’ve left the keys in the ignition and so will be in trouble and perhaps lose their job as a result. They might think they can bring about a resolution “informally” without needing to tell the gaffer they breached driver security rules, not least because such a breach (and theft of vehicle and contents) would surely be deemed gross misconduct.

Blimey, run over, dead, there he was in the middle of the road gone and guilty of gross misconduct. No death in service no pension for dependants.
