For all Royal Mail Managers.

Post by guardianangel »

Came across this today and it rang so true:

People don't change their behaviour
when other people yell at them,
shame them and criticise them.
People change their behaviour
when they feel heard, understood and loved,
Growth and change require connection and compassion.

If your'e one of those bosses reading this tonight maybe spend a few minutes thinking about this and ask yourself can i do things differently and make your job a whole lot easier ,surely your stress level's are high too trying to manage a workforce so disengaged.(and one for a boss in our place the swearing and sarcastic comments help no one)

Were quite lucky at our place , its a small office with 2 reasonable managers .

A phrase i heard many moons ago "Behaviour breeds behaviour", it rings true in any interaction

In my experience a lot of line managers can be ok. I believe it’s the DSM’s upwards that are the problem trouble is line managers etc are scared to tell them how it actually is

What can be expected when this is a culture throughout the company from top down?

Made worse by a culture of zero responsibility?

Managers are pressured by senior managers who are pressured by area managers who are pressured by national managers who are pressured by the board.
None of whom. NONE of whom say anything other than “company/business/finances/competition”

In my experience most managers are forced into any “bad behaviour” by the bad behaviour of those above them.

One day we’ll have an approach to our staff(you know those “lovely posties” who “own the doorstep” that they love to advertise?) which is deserving of how much they give to the company and their communities.

You never know, as the OP says, that positive and modern approach may stop our industrial relations being stuck in the 1970s.

The positive and modern approach is Simon's way. He has them trained on his golden pathway or whatever he's calling it.

Like talking to a plank engaging with them.

Most line managers are ok.

They're just under massive pressure from above to make posties lives a misery. They don't want to and know they're in the wrong, but like us all they have bills to pay, so they try to walk that tightrope.

I have never understood why managers choose to manage in a condescending, draconian way....

Do they think it's going to make me go out on my round and rush around for them so that they can tick a box and make them happy. No. I already know I am doing my round faster than the average postie, so it's going to make me slow down and I'll never do you any favours.

I am not even talking about daily harassment/criticism - I am just talking about managers that will do or say something ridiculous to you once in a while. I always remember the times each manager messed me around or wrongly criticised me unfairly, especially when they ask me to come in early or work my day off. Do you really think I am going to work overtime to help you....

Some of these managers don't even know where your round is, how big it is, or exactly where you are going for the day in terms of having to deliver parcels to the worst properties for consuming time. Yet 'delivering X amount is possible'..... the lies and plucking things out of their a** cracks at times is laughable.

Because they have absolutely no accountability for their mistakes, normally they just pin them on opgs.

I’ve seen dozens of managers at my mc. Most low life failures who make terrible decisions.

Only ever seen one get fired for taking bribes and another “team leader” carted off by the police for having child pornography on their phone…

that’s the bar for being reprimanded, the rest get moved around too another diocese if they take the bullying too far…

There’s a dom called Zoe who’s currently at hove who made the nicest place to work (and we worked hard) in to a horrible place. It was so strange. Shed look for fights and arguments. Just vile.

We've had 2 managers recently who were posties that injured themselves and got told "trainee manager or IHR," took the former just before this whole thing kicked off. One is really nice, and helps throw in walks/IPS and sorts packets out with us. The other has let the power go to his head and shouts abuse at people all morning
