Strikes Cancelled - Did you agree or not with the decision

I have decided to put a poll up because a lot of the more vocal people are posting in the original thread and its getting a tad heated in that thread so to allow people from both sides, or neither, to show if not post their opinion, I thought a poll would be a good idea.

If you wish to discuss the cancellation please remain respectful of others' opinions, name calling demeans your position and shows us all in a bad light.

Nope but I understand. It’ll help the media coverage but it won’t help with impacting the business so I guess it’s one thing for another. How many people ended up going in today?

I think the strikes should have gone ahead, but picket lines cancelled. RM have nobody in their top management that care for a company that represent the crown, this has been proven.

Even if it wasn't a strike day i believe post should have been paused to remember The Queen, excluding specials. Employees paid to prep and sort then go home.

CWU are right to have done this, however as the business name is Royal Mail and they carry the crown they should have had some respect and stopped deliveries for today out of respect, but they have shown they have none.

When Princess Diana passed, the Saturday of her funeral was declared a ‘non-service day’ by the regulator. So if it was a duty day for you, it was a free day off.
Some of the Mon-Fri duty holders at my office complained that they didn’t get a day off

personally i think the strike should have gone ahead without pickets,however because of the late change of heart i believe for the company the damage is already done and yet those that go in get paid,best of both worlds

I was a reserve at the time and was on a Tuesday-Saturday Early shift and on the Tuesday were still expected to work the day on the Wednesday we were to get the hour off for the funeral then Thursday 2 hours and finally on the Friday the whole shift off. As for the strike being called off at last minute I can actually remember a strike day when I was on a 6 pm start and it was called off at 5 pm and Royal Mail called the Locker and Mech staff to tell them it was off but the rest of us were left to stay at home.

My instant reaction yesterday was 'keep the strike, cancel the picket'.

Now I've slept on it, I thought cancelling the strike was the correct decision. I can't see these strikes stopping any time soon and it's probably best to look good in the public eye (as the media are already after all the unions). The only downside is the boardroom will be laughing their heads off at this.

Further down the road, this might hopefully come back to bite RM, 'the workers cancelled a strike out of respect, and for you it's business as usual', I can't see them keeping the Royal in Royal Mail much longer.

Have they even made a statement about our nations loss? All I've seen is 'your stamps are valid'.

To cancel so late is ridiculous, this has tones of when they cancelled the previous strike because of covid, that did us no favours and neither will this. I am frankly disgusted. I assume they have also cancelled the next dates also, because that's the week of the funeral probably.

I agree, I'll be surprised if we go out on strike again this year.

Yes, the death of a monarch is a big issue.
But the CWU calling off a strike a few hours beforehand is a retrograde step under any circumstances. No picketing and a quiet respectful silence was the appropriate action.

Very poor decision by the CWU all the momentum we had with the strikes has been taken away everyone was on board i think the CWU have lost all that members will be crossing the picket line losing faith in the union

As has been mentioned the picket lines should have been cancelled but we could have all stayed off work. The result would have been the same in disruption but show our respects at the same time.

This is why we now have the moral upper hand, we can always throw that back at Royal Mail. You carry the crown, but you have no respect.

Had we stayed out then Thompson would accuse us of treason.

I agree 3 strike days totally wasted with little or no impact & RM 3 days pay in their pocket from each employee, need to be out for a week minimum to cause a slight dent.
