Message from Ricky McAulay - CWU gives formal notice of second ballot for industrial action

I am disappointed to report the CWU has now given us formal notification of a second ballot for industrial action relating to change.

A second ballot is a ballot against the change we need to win, and is premature. It is another sign that the CWU are against the change required to modernise our business so we can compete, grow and succeed in the future.

A second ballot will cost the union money, time and energy and is not a good use of members’ fees.
We stand ready to talk to the CWU, but it must be about both change and pay.

We are losing £1 million a day

We are losing £1 million a day and we need to change what we are doing to fix the situation.

We offered a deal worth up to 5.5% for CWU grade colleagues, the biggest increase we have offered for many years, which the CWU rejected. But in a business that lost £92 million in the first quarter, we can only fund this offer by making the changes that will pay for it and ensure Royal Mail can grow and remain competitive in a fast-moving industry.

It is worrying that our trade union is so resistant to changing when we are in such a precarious position as a business. Any seeds of doubt the CWU has sown about that is unfounded. We have offered to open up our books to the union and, after they have seen the facts, would welcome their view.

The damaged caused by industrial action will have lasting effects

Industrial action would be the most significant act of self-harm the business could inflict on itself. Now is not the right time for the uncertainty industrial action will bring. Now is the time to agree on a deal that includes the changes we need to set us up for tomorrow, not just today.

We remain committed to working with the CWU to grow this great business and ensure long term job security for us all.

Ricky, you dont want "change". You want to put our current terms and conditions through a shredder. You want us to pretty much give our life over to RM with little or no guaranteed days or times to have a family life let alone any work-life balance. You want to create a new gig-economy by paying 37 hours but letting us know how many hours you want us for. And you sell this to us as if it is for our benefit.

Now you seem to be telling us that the CWU are responsible for the situation that you have created. They are there to support our rights and you don't seem to understand that simple fact.

Where the CEO cannot help himself with all of his lies, you do the same with your endless bullshit. And it's getting pretty boring and repetitive now.

The current offer is ridiculous on pay and ridiculous on changes. If you don't offer something significantly better we'll strike and keep on striking.
