So Si and the guys have slipped the suggestion of monthly pay in with the discussion about annualised hours
Simon Says
I don't know whether annualised ours is the right phrase for what it is that we are proposing to do, what we're actually thinking about, and look, it's for the negotiation team, we'd love to have The CWU's point of view as well, but what we're thinking about is how can we give everybody a regular income every month, accepting that off peak, you'll work less hours per day, but on peak, you'll be working more hours a day.
It should release more time for holidays during off peak time, it should allow everybody to plan their income on a more regular basis, and it also means that we'll need less temporary workers during the peak we feel, so we can have more of the core team delivering them brilliant quality and productivity, which they actually do best.
Yay or nay?
"A third of the world's farmland is now useless due to soil degradation, yet we still keep producing mouths to feed. And what's you answer to that? Energy saving lightbulbs?"
Monthly pay wouldn't be a massive issue for me tbh, although I'd prefer to stay weekly but the current issue of overtime not being paid correctly would have to be sorted before I'd agree.
Excellent point and a major hurdle for a lot of people before they'd readily accept being paid monthly.
From a purely personal point of view I don't need help from my employer to manage my money, I would rather it was in MY BANK ACCOUNT EARNING NEXT TO NOTHING. Would RM benefit financially (interest) from all our wages being in their coffers for longer?

And how actually would it start waiting a month with no pay would be unacceptable to nearly everyone who has been payed weekly since day one, also all overtime would need to be checked weekly as managers have trouble on a weekly basis let alone a monthly bases, this idea needs binning from the start, another cost cutting exercise from upper management.
Wouldn’t bother me personally but I don’t do any overtime. If I did do a lot of overtime then monthly pay would be huge no. You know for a fact that they would get your pay wrong then you would have to waiting another month for the rest.
I’ve always been heavily in favour of monthly pay. It’s a lot easier to budget if all your bills go out the same day. It defies belief we don’t even have the option to choose really.
Monthly pay would be my preference, I had it in every other job.
BUT.
Royal Mail would have to sort out the lack of confidence and trust its work force has that they can administrate it fairly, quickly and reliably.
At the moment they are showing no signs of that - so I voted No.

Most people's bills don't though, you end up running out of money the last week I've found its just not spread out as equally over the month, when you get a lump sum its far easier to spend when its just sitting there in your bank.
It should release more time for holidays during off peak time,
I'm not very sure how he works that out as surely if you are working fewer hours during off peak management have fewer hours to work with and therefore less scope to have people on annual leave but assuming he's smarter than me...
Unless you have done this job for a prolonged period you really don't understand how big an impact the busier, colder wetter, darker months have on us and how important it is to have holidays during those busy periods not when it's "off peak".
Annualising hours will inevitably push up sick absence rates which I'm led to believe is a bit of a hot issue right now. It will also push up long term ill health and health related retirement.
Given management's ongoing struggle to align workload to hours on a weekly basis it's also a recipe for disaster for managers.

If folk can't budget week to week god help them paid monthly, Live like kings for a week and Paupers for 3.
Pay me a one off £1000 bonus and I'll accept monthly pay, and also pay should be paid 2 weeks in advance (basic rate) and then 2 weeks in arrears, so the first month you don't not have any income for a whole month.
