Postal workers: Vote no and defend our terms and conditions

I think this company is in for a rude awakening when they try and recruit and maintain staff.This job is classed as unskilled but as people have said it is not an easy job.I got this job in 1995 there were 2 of us at the interview the other guy got the job then 2 days later i got a phone call to say can you start tomorrow the other guy had thrown the mail bag full of mail over a hedge and quit.That was back then so good luck getting new people on reduced everything to stay.Dont care anyones opinion royal mails best asset is its workforce and they have ruined that and are doomed to fail no matter what they do.

Well said. They'd have us believe people are queuing up to take over our jobs but it is total bs. People who stick at being posties are different, and most people would know walking around 10 miles a day, every day isn't for them without even trying. The fact is we're early morning people too. It's ingrained and if they try getting people to do 10 mile hikes in the afternoon and evenings, they're going to find out that humans able and prepared to do that are very scarce indeed.

i agree il be up at 05.30 for years to come just hanging about the house waiting to go to work lol.

If this ends up being a NO vote, then I will facepalm. I strongly believe a NO vote would end up with us being offered a worse deal further down the line when the company is in even more dire straits.

Then that will also get a no.

Absolutely spot on, I've been saying this for a while, they really do think that there'd be a queue round the street for jobs, without sounding disrespectful to anyone, I'm pretty sure most of us know that it's certainly a step or two up from minimum wage fodder.

A recruitment and retention problem doesn't help us.
Apart from piling more work on us all it does is push Royal Mail towards other employment models like agency staff and owner/drivers.

I think most of the new starts will be directed towards the parcel strategy anyway so they won't be walking 10k a day, the dwindling mail will be left to the dwindling "legacy" staff.

Royal Mail's main problem with recruitment is the snail's pace it takes to get people in the door, once they sort that out they'll do what other s**t employers do and just have a rolling recruitment process that takes a week at most.

I think Royal Mail recruitment policy going forward will probably be temp/agency based especially for the DPR routes. People won’t sign up to do a walk on those terms but they probably will if you are giving them 8 hours pay to go deliver about a 100 items.

People go work for Yodel and Evri on much worse conditions. Least with Royal Mail you are guaranteed a days pays regardless of what you deliver plus you don’t have to use your own car or phone.
