What would people think of receiving the £500 bonus in return for the 23rd / 24th December becoming none strike days?

It’s a suggestion I’ve pondered about floating wider, because;

• That £500 has always been somewhere in RM’s offers so it’s clearly budgeted for (and has been artificially inflating the % rise so would be good to get it paid and off the calculation).

• I don’t think they got as many people in as they were hoping today - I only spotted two shoebox size “clear delivery office” photos today - so some in the management team might be starting to lose their nerve as the press attention intensifies.

• Conversely, the two days in question might not see as strong a walkout. I have to admit I’m conflicted on whether I should continue to hold out for those particular days.

• The suggestion is clearly a sticking plaster and doesn’t resolve anything else… but that’s kind of the point and us making £500 from the threat of strike action could be seen as a small win.

And finally;

• Dealing with a mountain of blacklog after Christmas/into the new year doesn’t sound like much fun!

Thoughts please?

£500 for 1 days work (the other day is a lieu day). Don't think Royal Mail will gladly accept that considering they took a few quid of our xmas bonus which was a bit petty  They would probably get back to us sometime on boxing day after going through ACAS or they would probably only do that in an effort to try and stop posties striking and take it back off us if we did.....

What would people think if those strike days were after Xmas instead?? So that Boxing Day Monday and Tuesday are bank holidays and then have Wednesday and Thursday as strike days?? That way we only have to work 2 days that week - Friday and Saturday.

Thoughts please?
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Had to have a wee laugh to myself on this one. Some duties have bigger indoor prep than others. Some people have bigger outdoor deliveries than others. Some people are a hell of lot more efficient than others. People coming back and leaving whilst others are still out delivering. Why would you work your pan in, then go help some piss taker on the go slow. Name another job that rewards mediocrity and at the same time punishes efficiency? I cant think of many.

I get what you're saying - but that's not really the way I envision it. I definitely would not expect someone who is a good worker to go and help out some slow bugger - that would not be fair.

They should put in a hard rule that you cannot clock out early regularly and that you are expected to do an honest days work. If you know you've had an easy day - then they should expect us to come back to the delivery office and help out there or go and find another postie of your choosing to help out. This would mainly be a Summer only thing.

The only reason I am putting this forward is because Royal Mail know full well they are paying out for a full days work in the Summer when a lot of posties finish early. This is at least partly, but probably mainly why they want to annualise hours.

I get the feeling most posties do not want annualised hours.... so what's an alternative.... making people work their time.

I don't think annualised hours would work anyway as these days we are understaffed - Royal Mail may instead owe us hours in the Winter due to us working long hours in the Summer.

And I get it - some posties are obsessed with finishing early for whatever reason. We have the people that start early - skip breaks - then leave 30 minutes early each day. I don't know why they have to do things this way.....but these people will HATE the idea of having to work their actual hours start to finish.

My offer to Royal Mail...

1. You give all workers an 8% pay rise. I don't give a crap if it isn't backdated - just start paying it from Friday.

2. No change in start and finish times and no annualised hours as you have described. JUST STOP PEOPLE GOING HOME EARLY IN SUMMER! - AND GET THOSE LAZY BUGGAS TO STAY UNTIL THEIR FINISH TIMES! - doing door2doors or cleaning cars or filling vans with fuel or delivering any parcels left. Stop allowing posties to walk off the premises early! - maybe even ask them to go and help another postie out before coming back to the depot.

3. I believe Sunday working has already been more or less agreed upon. The extra pay for Sundays will be gradually reduced over time. Volunteers will be the ones working Sundays.

4. Redundancies. It seems these are already happening in the North West due to the parcel hubs in that area - fine. Callers Counters going - fine - as long as those in the callers counters can stay on as employees in other areas of the business - postal/sorting. Anyone who has a disability and cannot move to another part of the business should be paid off adequately. Voluntary Redundancies are happening - fine. Right - that's enough! if you want to get rid of anyone else - get rid of the people that applied for VR.

5. Revisions. If you're thinking of making rounds bigger and therefore unachievable, then wake the hell up! it's not going to work! - No ridiculous revisions! - make some common sense revisions! there are rounds that exist that are 20 minutes too short and rounds that are 20 minutes too long. It doesn't take a genius to work out what to do in this situation.

Done. Kicked some sense into the situation. Compromise and logic.

On top of this - now bugga off!! nobody believes in current management. We need new CEOs. Some people with common sense and who are TEAM leaders.
There's duties in our revision that will get an hr worth added on and they're always well over an hr late back now! There's only one runner who's ever come close to doing it in time and yet still they want to an hrs worth to it. Where's the logic?

Had to have a wee laugh to myself on this one. The only time posties stand together is during the strikes. Any other time it’s just in it for themselves.
People heading out on their duties while other duties are still being boxed in or needing boxed in.
People coming back and going home while their colleagues are still out delivering, not one though that hey maybe I can go help them finish their route or take half a street of them.
Biggest bunch of two faced people I’ve ever seen.
Teamwork, doesn’t exist except in some cliques, even then they would t think to go out and help each other.
That’s one reason I think all this solidarity crap while strikes are going on is just bull.
If we want solidarity, show it at all times.
Rant over.
To be honest - I blame management more than the posties. Why would you allow posties to leave the premises early. It's easy to prevent it from happening, especially now they have the scan in and out system in place.

Saying this - I know our managers leave early sometimes - it's rare - but it happens. Assuming they also have to scan in and out now - they will probably never go home early again as they could lose their job for doing so as it's a health and safety issue if they disappear.
Why is it a health and safety issue? Our managers finish 2 hrs before the rural duties finish times and that if they finish on time. Which is pretty much impossible. The guys who do pkts and LAT's just post their PDA and van keys in the office collection box as the office is all locked up when they finish.

Carpenter, bricklayer, plasterer. Often get a day rate and it’s job and finish.
So if you had one of these doing work on your house and you were paying them till Friday but they were rushing and cutting corners so they could finish Thursday, how would you feel?

If it did, it would be telling porkies because that's exactly where they get left.

You mention cutting corners. Because someone is quick doesnt mean they are doing the job wrong.
And often builders give a price for the amount of work they do. Nothing to do with time taken.

You have to accept a lot of people are only quick because they cut corners though

Sure some, like you I assume, are quick because you walk fast don’t stop to chat and keep going but there are many who jump over walls, walk across grass, don’t shut gates, carry bags heavier than they should be, barely wait for a second at the door, doorstep, don’t fill the cards out correctly, no access flats/tenements they can’t be bothered going up, don’t do the door to doors correctly the list goes on
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

With the original revision, the least we should be doing is using the trolleys, if the company cared, then all the tweaks and revisions would have worked -saving them paying o.t for 7/8 years. Biggest problem is that RM believe we should all be working like the quickest runner, bag carrier etc. If we had started on time and finished on time, then the backlog would be huge - serve them right. As said elsewhere, people will kill themselves to finish on time, whether they do the job right or wrong.

I think you’re all missing the point, making the rounds bigger and more unachievable is how you reduce the USO to 5 days, they have no intention of making a deal, todays message to coms sending them out on delivery is proof they have written Xmas off, and come January they really won’t feel the pinch from strike action, they are playing a game with us

I feel that they have calculated that the damage of losing the USO by being stripped of it will cost them less than if they break the contract. No company that wanted to keep the USO would be acting the way they are.
