Surely the USO is the biggest hindrance to Royal Mail. I am no expert on the USO - is there any way for Royal Mail to get around the USO other than failing it and getting fined. The country needs a reliable mail service.... businesses, people, councils, banks, NHS etc etc rely on it.

If Royal Mail have no interested in it then they can bugga off - time to renationalise!
Get rid of USO more like. A 5 day letter service is more than enough.
And renationalise? Last time we hardly had any investment at all. We were stuck in the past for too long and ended up having to play catch-up with other companies.

Best thing we can do is agree on a deal. It’ll probably be close to the deal we already have been offered.
Sorry what sort of investment have we had since privatisation? We have vans in our office that look liked they have been dumped. Pdas that don't work in the rain, mail bags that you have to tie onto the trollies because they all have broken hoops. You have to hunt round the floor for elastic bands because they never order any. You have to buy your own pens to fill out the P739 cards. The oldest fleet of lorries in the industry! All privatisation has done is pulled the money out, that should have been used to modernized the business and given it to the next short termist share holders.

The letter side of the business would certainly be better suited, run or at least subsidies by the government.

And in terms of the pay deal, Simon knows exactly that it wouldn't take much to get a deal done but is deliberately holding back. But can't think why!

Based on the following he's just hoping we break....

He has said 'THIS IS MY FINAL OFFER' to make us think we have to take it.

He has threatened compulsory redundancies even though he previously announced 10,000 jobs will go through VR and natural wastage. So I feel he's threatened compulsory redundancies to scare us into taking his 'final offer'.

He thinks most of us are skint and we will give up. Maybe he thought at this time of year we'd be especially desperate. I can't tell you how skint people are, but it seems the vast majority are financially ok seeing as we keep striking en masse.

It feels this 'last offer' is simply his last effort to get a deal which is massively in Royal Mail's favour. The reality is it's far from a fair offer to the work force. He will have to accept that he isn't going to win. He needs to compromise. The media and public are on our side which puts more pressure on him, and this rally in London is going to add to that pressure.

Simon has done the best he can to try to push through what the board want - he will get some of what he wants through. It's time to get a deal done by the end of the year and move on.

'Ferry operator P&O has revealed it is paying £36.5m to cover compensation for the 800 seafarers it sacked without warning....

It said more than 40 workers will receive more than £100,000, while no worker will receive less than £15,000'. - The Guardian.

I never really looked too much into the P&O situation before. I assumed that they were all sacked and replaced with no compensation, but they got an average payout of £45,625 to be let go, £15,000 minimum.

I would like to know how many delivery offices have Vacancies across the uk ?
Then how many agencies staff are employed in mail centres ?
If we had a total for that then we could compared that with the total of compulsory redundancies RM are looking for.
As the way the jobs going more people seem to be leaving then ever before at the delivery office i work at we are sitting at over 20 vacancies.

That’s a huge percentage of staff if that’s across the board in all mail centres.
There can’t be much scope for compulsory redundancies

Type in 'postperson' into the Royal Mail jobs search bar and only 18 jobs come up. Only 2 for permanent contracts which are on Scottish islands...

The rest are 3 month contracts, most of them say 'end date 24th March 2023'....the adverts say 'there has never been a more exciting time to join Royal Mail' - it's unbelievable. It's the worst time - you are getting a contract with an end date of 24th March as this is probably when you will be told to bugga off.

Thompson's latest deal stated 'no compulsory redundancies until end of March 2023 at earliest'......

What is happening 24th March or shortly after?

Surely even if van sharing was ended and there genuinely was no jobs for long serving non drivers in delivery at all - they would likely be given indoor work at a mail centre or hub. They couldn’t have agency workers at mail centres whilst people in delivery who could do the same work lose their jobs.
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

the jobs on scottish islands are likely the ones that were featured in an article about how they couldnt get anyone to take the job as they all left because they were treated like crap.

I noticed they all had joining on payments of £1,500. I guess this is why.

Not in my MC, it is grossly overstaffed and they still manage to keep bringing in un-needed agency
Workers.

Now that’s a redundancy package I would take.
