This is a different game to the last time we had a national strike (2009). We're a private company now.
This isn't about building a huge backlog and creating chaos in the pipeline, this is about making our large customers and shareholders nervous because ultimately they will pressure the board to find a solution.
Royal Mail may be able to clear the backlog but it will cost them dearly in potential lost orders and the shareholders won't like that.
The longer that drags on and the longer we're able to afford to keep striking the more pressure will come to resolve it.
A strike for a week or more would be s**t or bust and RM would be able to ride it out knowing when it's over we're done.
An indefinite series of rolling strikes is a far bigger worry for them.
We had rolling strikes in one of the last strikes that we had if I remember??
About the shareholders. Well, we dropped out of the footsie 100 a few weeks ago the same as ITV. So, if we want to get promoted back then you would think that Simon and his jobs for the boys crew should get their heads together and either drop some of the daft conditions that they are after or offer a ground breaking increase. As they seem quite reluctant to offer the latter; they are going to have to look at the former....
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Like a lot of other people have mentioned, that might be the game both sides are playing. Drop the horrible stuff and it's a win for the CWU. Only give a three or four percent increase, it's a win for the company. Sad, but whatever.
Don't forgot our Divvy of a leader has forced a 2% payrise on us ,and will be backdating. So we have an average of £150 coming in our wages.Just use this for strike days.So really u don't lose any money.Full walkout for at least 2 days.Wot a cleaver plan by simple simon.
If you get £200 gross back pay, you'll get something like £133.50 net.
OK well it least if we do go on strike we got some money.Better than bugger all.
Any one know how the reduction in the working week is going, I thought they had agreed a few years back that we’d be working a 35 hour week or did I dream it

Bearing in mind they want to bring in new starters on 40 hour contracts I think there is absolutely no chance of current full timers seeing a further reduction from 37 hours any time soon.
I couldn't care less about the pay rise now, it's the stuff they want to bring in that's the straw that's broke the camel's back with me. The only hope is a massive yes for strike over pay will make Simon and the board blink and back away from pushing the changes in by executive action before we have the chance to be balloted about the changes

As the "horrible stuff" isn't part of the pay claim , how is that a win for the CWU ? If the CWU don't achieve an inflation matching pay increase (or pretty close to it) it could be the end for them.
