All sports fixtures etc will be cancelled ,
Then how come I watched Arsenal and Man Utd?

If you were on a picket line after the announcement that the Queen had died you would have witnessed a change in the public behaviour. We had so much support earlier but then had a number of public saying show some respect. It would be far worse tomorrow.

Those who argue we should have simply stood down picket lines are wrong for a number of reasons. A strike is only effective if we ensure one we make the public aware of our dispute and two we get a withdrawal of Labour. A silent strike does neither and we would be attacked in the media in a massive way potentially losing public support.

The other angle is the short notice of the decision. Well the official announcement of the Queens death was 18:36. We made the decision by 19:30 and had discussions with Royal Mail that given the short notice of the decision that individuals who could make it into work would not be taken down any formal procedures and would simply lose the days pay as if they were striking.

I understand fully that a number of individuals would have not arranged child care or may not be able to get into work tomorrow but talks are on going to try and get the opportunity to potentially have different options such as either annual leave or make up time which has happened previously when a strike has been called off at short notice.

Remember a situation like this has not happened in 70 years the UK will be in a state of mourning , we will need public support if we are going to win this dispute and especially if a potential take over by a European investment bank and you don’t win public support carrying on with strike action the day after the Head of State has died what ever your views on the monarch.

This dispute has not finished. We are still in the fight of our lives but we need public support to win and you will lose it by simply carrying on striking because it is to short notice or you have made plans.

Standing down picket lines may boost some peoples Egos but Royal Mail and the media with demonise us ahead of our next strike.

Sometimes unprecedented events happened and you have to make the right decision for the best outcome for the future instead of a knee jerk decision which says let’s ignore the Head of states Death and carry on with either a silent strike ( what is a point of that ? ) or carry on with the strike if nothing has happened.

Surely everyone can see the bigger picture and understand that the best thing to do to go on and win the dispute was to suspended todays action and to show a mark of respect at the death of the Queen as an head of state. Now Royal Mail must show some respect by stopping executive action.
But they absolutely won’t stop ea and that’s going to make the union look very stupid and that’s why your members are angry.

The job is about to be totally unworkable and we all know it.

I think you need to start worrying about the support you've just lost from the membership.

Tomorrow will be a s**t show with two days mail because mailcentres network and distribution will now be working tonight.

Members won't forget, the PEC has just undermined the entire dispute.
All you had to do was stand down the picket lines, the public would not have even given a thought to whether they got their mail tomorrow.

Huge mistake made tonight.
Totally Agree WG :Applause Cancel the Picket Lines but WHY have to go into work? Surely letting all members stay at home and deal with the death of the Queen in their own way would be better than expecting them to pound the streets with an armful of Pizza Hut Households? :arrrghhh

I will not be going into work tomorrow and they can stick my days wages up their ass! :cuppa
Absolutely this. Especially since I've just spent the best part of an hour, on top of the one last night, answering messages from pissed off members.

Gate Meeting after gate meeting drumming up some support from a DO traditionally labelled as having no backbone, almost 100% solidarity on the past 3 strike days and incredible numbers on the picket lines and now...

Colleagues and friends basically saying wtf? We listened to and backed you and the Union, lost 3 days pay and now this? RM being grateful and talking about catching up on the service has poured petrol on it as well.

As a rep I'll reflect, adapt and use what I can to try and get the momentum again, but I feel very frustrated. Once again we're left to drift at ground level with no proper guidance from the top. For the first time in years I was thinking, yes, we're getting somewhere here, we're making a f***ing good fight if this. Now it feels as if all momentum is lost and we have to start again.

I get that public opinion is a fickle thing, but Woody was right above...this has really split the membership and I'm worried about losing those who've 'seen it all before, union always bottles it in the end but we'll get behind you for this as we've got nothing to lose I spice."

Like I said, on a local level we work our balls off to win over that apathy and now we'll have to do it all over again.

The membership is definitely split.
The next planned strikes are 20 days off, which is a hell of a long time when momentum has been lost.

According to the Royal Mail site, CWU members are on strike 30th September and 1st October. First I’ve heard about it:

Wake up!

This places the union in a very tricky position.
How long is the period of mourning for a Queen who's sat on the throne for 70 years?

When does striking stop being disrespectful exactly? , If it's when the Daily Mail decides we really are screwed.

The strikes at the end of the month are only 3 weeks away, that may only be a week after the funeral so they have to be at risk of being cancelled.
It all depends when the funeral is. If it's in around 10 days time, then I think those strike dates are ok....

The strike day on the 1st October has been chosen because there are going to be national protests on that day so it gives everyone the chance to go to them. If those strike dates are cancelled then I guess the enough is enough protests will be cancelled.

Martin what is your opinion of Royal Mail expecting all it's staff to turn up for work today? Tramping the streets delivering unnecessary bumf!

If they had any Respect then surely they should have suspended operations for the day? Closed EVERY single Business outlet, Put some flowers on the gates and let their staff contemplate this sad event at home with their families. You may be trying to win the PR Battle but I'm sure that would have created the right image for both the CWU & ROYAL Mail.:cuppa

Spot on Plodder. It was the perfect opportunity to do that.
Returning to work today shows no amount respect to anybody.
A lot of workers are suffering mentally through this strike period.
On top of this, the Queen has died.
So, expecting business as usual doesn't sit right.

Here’s what is happening in my office today.

Everyone that is here has to be on ips or sorting packets and then throwing rounds in , no one is doing a delivery today because we’re essentially sorting through the backlog …..well done the cwu 👏👏👏

Dunno what happened there...made a couple of edits and set off an echo

Hopefully a mod will happen along to sort it and thus conceal my incompetence.
