It could be split so that all, or any part, of the infrastructure belonged to one company, and Royal Mail operations, letters and parcels, was a separate company paying rental for use of the facilities.SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑02 Apr 2023, 13:28You could spit of GLS and PF but apart from that any other splitting off is both physically and logistically impossibleSeymour Buts wrote: ↑02 Apr 2023, 12:36Never going to happen. Certainly not how people want it to, anyway. The letters side could end up nationalised again, as things like the NHS currently still rely on paper. I've no doubt it'll be stripped back to bare minimums though. The USO will go (in its current form) along with much of the workforce.

Re: Petition : Bring Royal Mail back into public ownership
THIS government won’t return RM to public ownership because it would be a humiliation to them since it was they that sold it off in the first place.

Re: Petition : Bring Royal Mail back into public ownership
Why does RM need to be brought back under public ownership?
Letter deliveries are an ever more irrelevant, inefficient and anachronistic form of communication.
The only thing that makes sense whether under public or private ownership is for letter deliveries to undergo transformation and rationalisation, reducing the USO and reducing the size of the workforce and infrastructure currently required to meet that USO.

We deliver 6.5 billion more letters than parcels every year. Like it or not, letters are what Royal Mail does and despite neglect by the current owners they are still much used and much needed. Royal Mail will be as nought without them.Mike G wrote: ↑02 Apr 2023, 18:35Why does RM need to be brought back under public ownership?

6.5 billion is a drop from 20 billion in 2004, pretty soon it will be down to 1 billion.Barnacle wrote: ↑02 Apr 2023, 18:53We deliver 6.5 billion more letters than parcels every year. Sorry, you misread my post. We deliver 8 billion letters every year. 2004 was 19 years ago and another country.TopperGas wrote: ↑02 Apr 2023, 19:136.5 billion is a drop from 20 billion in 2004, pretty soon it will be down to 1 billion.Barnacle wrote: ↑02 Apr 2023, 18:53We deliver 6.5 billion more letters than parcels every year. Letters will become more niche in the future. Doubt it will go down to 1 billion though. That 1 billion probably just covers Christmas cards.

I don't think many RM offices are owned by RM, I believe that most are leasedseesred wrote: ↑02 Apr 2023, 17:24It could be split so that all, or any part, of the infrastructure belonged to one company, and Royal Mail operations, letters and parcels, was a separate company paying rental for use of the facilities.SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑02 Apr 2023, 13:28You could spit of GLS and PF but apart from that any other splitting off is both physically and logistically impossibleSeymour Buts wrote: ↑02 Apr 2023, 12:36Never going to happen. Re: Petition : Bring Royal Mail back into public ownership
It's a red herring.
If I post one letter to a house or three letters to the same house. I still have to walk up the path taking the same time.
Then because mail is down, the office is revised, my duty span is longer. My mail goes up.
That's the USO.

Even Keith Williams said at the select committee that letter volumes have probably bottomed out.
The volumes aren’t the issue the issue is having to deliver them six days a week and if we are all honest with ourselves it’s probably not needed.

Re: Petition : Bring Royal Mail back into public ownership
RM measure the duties by the total number of items for each stream, they don't measure how many items each DP gets, a big chunk of that is down to not having the data available

That's probably correct. I know the MC where I work is leased. I was thinking more about machinery and vehicles. I'm not sure what their status is. Sometimes it makes better financial sense to lease these as well, if the contract covers maintenance and and upgrades.

I think a lot of RM vehicles are leased anyway.seesred wrote: ↑03 Apr 2023, 11:21SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑02 Apr 2023, 20:02I don't think many RM offices are owned by RM, I believe that most are leasedseesred wrote: ↑02 Apr 2023, 17:24It could be split so that all, or any part, of the infrastructure belonged to one company, and Royal Mail operations, letters and parcels, was a separate company paying rental for use of the facilities.SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑02 Apr 2023, 13:28You could spit of GLS and PF but apart from that any other splitting off is both physically and logistically impossibleSeymour Buts wrote: ↑02 Apr 2023, 12:36Never going to happen.
