EVR offered on current terms to make any needed reductions in headcount.
Given that so many on here have said Sunday working means they're leaving, why would they offer EVR to anyone?
That EVR ship sailed long since.
My post was based around a fictional scenario where the USO would be changed to reflect modern life and the fact Royal Mail is a company listed on the stock exchange and no longer a public service.
Obviously under the current Royal Mail proposals EVR would be virtually non existent. Equally obviously the chance of reducing the USO to 3 days a week seems remote when proposals to drop just Saturday deliveries seem to be taking forever to implement.
Keep the one price go everywhere aspect of the USO but only deliver letters and standard parcels 3 days a week. Keep the current way of working but each van share partnership would cover 4 deliveries instead of 2 and alternate. Duty A and B delivered Monday, Wednesday, Friday. Duty C and D delivered Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. Single duty holders would cover 2 duties using the same principle. EVR offered on current terms to make any needed reductions in headcount. Savings used to maintain current terms and conditions and offer premium payment for voluntary Sunday working.
Fire Simon and hire you. It's not rocket science what you suggest but the cwu would never push for or accept it. The company does need a reset like your plan. Scaring people with 'compulsory' Sunday working is ridiculous, there's not enough Sunday work for it to be necessary to obligate Sunday working. You probably need 15% of an office to deliver pkts on Sunday, I'm sure there's enough who would volunteer for that at an enhanced rate like they do now.
Forget all about EVR especially on the quite generous terms we have, There are too many vacancies in the business, especially in delivery offices with the amount of walks failing, they use EVR when they need to get rid of bodies, they simply won't fill the vacancies and get rid of all the temporary contracts and long term sick.
Why dont they charge a pound a letter no matter who it is?
This is what I don't get... if letters are actually a burden in Simon Thompson's eyes.... why not just charge more, Royal Mail would either make an absolute killing from it, or reduce the volume of post being sent meaning they'd need less staff. It's win-win to them. Are there regulations stopping them from increasing prices?

As you've said yourself many times people say they will leave when/if X,Y or Z happens but don't.
I do however agree with you about EVR but for a different reason. that's pretty clear from the letter Simon sent to Dave on how the business intends to get rid of "dead wood" and they don't plan to pay for the pleasure.
It's in the paragraph entitled High Performance Culture which should give people a clue.

If you’re going to a 3 day service you can’t have the days that post arrives being dependent on which walk your house is on.
They’d at least have to be set days for everyone, the same, surely.

You mean... like bin collection?
Why not?
The number of deliveries you get per week is also probably going to depend on your postcode.
For some rural areas it could only be once or twice a week.

5 days a week maybe but 3...the mail and small packets would be hitting the roof,I just still think we still get enough work,if you have your day off and the frame doesn't go out that day your knackerd for the next two or three days, the small packets never seem to be included with the letters when talking about this area, its time consuming to sort and deliver or are people just talking about completley seperating the mail from any parcels packets from china etc.
If RM ever did get the USO reduced for letters to say every 3 days, would that mean a massive change in DOs (in MCs they'd probably have mech and non-mech mail processed 9-5 with just packets being sorted around the clock)? I could see RM standardising the walk frames so that either every slot is a single slot or every slot is a double slot, with a different walk being done on a frame each day (with fillets with the DP numbers/names changed each day to reflect the walk that's being done on that frame that day). A good % of the space used in DOs must be walk prep frames, I could see them using it as an excuse for many office mergers and office downsizing.

The idea that RM are going to invest the time and effort into constantly changing frame layouts on a daily basis is ridiculous.
They haven't even proposed a reduction in the USO from 6 days to 5 and already your brain is trying to think of the worst possible outcome for delivery.
You need to deal with this obsession SP, focus on what's going to happen in processing, at least you have some kind of knowledge base to work on.

If the slot sizes are all kept the same, it takes less then 30secs to change a from from one walk to another. The basic method is tried and tested. In MCs the letter and flat frames can get used for inward and outward (one or both might need to be split in two if not enough selections in one frame. the same frame can also be used for "facing" (making sure all letters are the right way up and orientated the same way)

I already know what's happening, RM are bring in more and more casuals. When anyone leaves they get replaced with casuals. Anytime now our start and finish times and the dispatch times to DOs will be made probably at least an hour later due to the changes in arrival patters. Where we used to get an early and a late run from the RDCs, both of which will have been part full, the early runs have been axed and the later run is full.
The idea of having a DO as a local parcel hub has already been dropped as we're back to sorting them to the individual DOs in the MC.
Large normal and large Tracked packets now get sorted and dispatched together, I think it's only a matter of time before the same is done with small normal and small Tracked
I have to say I'm surprised nothing had been said or proposed about reducing the 6 day letters service. I'm not sure on this, but am led to believe we're one of the only postal services in the world that still deliver letters 6 days a week? Monday's are that light in terms of letters now in our office it's a waste of time taking them out. 20 - 30% call rate I'd estimate.
